I did the big 7 upgrade yesterday. Truck was running great all day today, no issues. Then I went to drive home from hunting at dusk and I had no headlights, gauge lights, b-pillar lights, or radio. I know that the b-pillar lights and radio had been working just fine all day. Heater blower motor worked and the truck ran fine, but I had to drive home in darkness. I suspect something that was on the edge finally gave out now that my voltages are higher. I know that the dash light dimmer function of my headlight switch has not work correctly for years. Any ideas what I should begin looking at in the morning?

*Repair* Door check, torn sheet metal

Got it all reinstalled just in time to get to a birthday party I had to attend, so I will have to take a pic of the finished repair tomorrow. -
*Repair* Door check, torn sheet metal
EUREKA replied to EUREKA's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I cut the handle short on a body hammer and stuck it inside the speaker hole in the door, then used the hammer and a dolly to flatten the are back out. All of my sheet metal was too thin so I cut a patch out of a piece of square tubing that I had laying around and welded it in. I did a few rounds of welding and grinding before the are was nice and flat. Forgot to take pics after the last grinding. I then drilled a new hole to mount the door check assembly and reinstalled my door. One of the door hinge pins broke do I replaced it with a "tension pin". I also took the opportunity to cut of the bottom part of the door hinges to make the door easier to remove in the future. -
*Repair* Door check, torn sheet metal
EUREKA replied to EUREKA's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I removed the door. It was surprising easy (compared to all the other jeep doors I've removed). I used a T-40 torx socket on a 3/8 racht to loosen some of the bolts. Most of the work of removing the door mounting bolts was done with a T-40 torx socket that I modified for the job by punching out the torx part and using it in a 8mm ratcheting wrench. Don't remember where I learned this trick. -
A new rattle popped up a few days ago on my '88. Upon inspection I found that the sheet metal had torn out around one of the mounting bolts for the door check assembly. When I removed the pin holding the door heck arm to the body, the entire assembly fell inside the door, leaving the top nut and bolt in place. Apparently not only had the sheet metal surrounding the lower mount given way, but the top mount had also broken off of the assembly, I cleaned up the area to be repaired with a wire wheel,

Thank you kindly, I now have a functioning door/headlight buzzer.

Replacement door hinge pin bushings?
EUREKA replied to EUREKA's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Funny thing, I did this today on my 88 and unlike my 91 the stock pins were indeed roll pins. -
One of them must be floating around in the kick panel area, there was only 1 wire attached to the door switch when I replaced it. I wondered why the switch had a place for two terminals.

Just replaced recently. My b-pillar lights function

I love having CC. don't know how people live without it.

Ok, make sense. My CC does actually work.

Unrelated to my request for ID of under dash objects, Any ideas why I have no door chime / headlight warning? I had assumed replacing my black module with the blue one would get me a door chime / headlight warning.

Great to know. Thank you. Taped alongside the pink/pink w/blk is a white with black strip, this is the one that is plugged into the IGN terminal of the fuse block. I haven't traced it out yet, looks like it joins a harness going over the column. Everything still seems to function when it is unplugged.
-
Thank you, I appreciate the knowledge!
-
Also, I just replaced my black door chime module with a blue one, in hopes of getting a headlight warning chime, yet I still have no door chime.

What is this yellow module? How about this black one, Is this fuse holder/ wiring harness with a conductor from the IGN terminal on my fuse block factory wiring?

1988 MJ wingvent & sideview configurations
EUREKA replied to EUREKA's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You mean I can swap out the mirrors and window parts instead of the entire doors? Embarrassing that I didn't even consider that. -
MY '88 MJ has non-functional wing vents, and side view mirrors that are placed behind the "wing vents". Like this one, I am not a fan. I would go with 97+ doors (I am on my 91 MJ, already have the doors bolted on, need to adjust them and install the 97+ latches next) but I don't want to hassle with the wiring on this one because I drive my 88 everyday and don't want to have it down for too long. Image search seem to indicate that most '88 Comanches did not have this config. Were functional wing vents an option? What about the side view placement? What year/type of door do you guys suggest I look for?
