Not sure what a blown rear has to do with a engine swap, whatever.

I'm going to park this project, maybe try to sell it. Now that I seem to be feeling better I'm going to get on the diesel conversion again and see if I can get it going. Any body want to buy a '86 MJ?
-
That sounds very probable. Would explain it. I said it half joking but the Caddy installation is sounding better all the time.

A little more detail. A couple years ago I bought a 1986 MJ, 2.8, 5speed, 4WD. Drove it until a rod went thru the block. It sat for a year. I found a 1986 S10 with a 2.8 engine, wrecked but the engine ran good. I pulled the MJ engine and sold it in a load of scrap. Normally I keep the old stuff until I got it running again but this time I didn't. Pulled the engine out of the S10 and installed it into the MJ. Noticed there were some minor differences but got everything back together, ALMOST. The new engine had a after market electric fuel pump and the old engine was the original mechanical FP..I had removed the mech FP from the old engine. It didn't fit the replacement block. That's where I'm at now. Either the MJ-S10 engines were different, or, somebody swapped one of the engines for something else.

I'm thinking somebody switched engines in this thing B4 I got it. I have a fuel pump like the one in your pic and it doesn't fit.Gonna have to check block casting numbers or something and see what it is. And as for the pressure, just get a inline regulator. adjustable. I know it's got my frustration level at a new high. I have a 500 CI Cadillac engine I rebuilt a year ago just sitting in the corner. waiting for something to put it in.

Got a '86 MJ with the 2.8. Bad mechanical fuel pump. I really don't feel like spending $50 for a new one. Got a dozen XJ with the in tank electric fuel pump. Anybody know if the electric, in tank fuel pump from a '84-'86 XJ would work in the fuel tank of a '86 MJ? I could just go out and pull one and try it but it's cold, wet and windy out there. Any comments? :dunno: :dunno:

I have a problem just remembering whether a .003 under bearing is bigger or smaller than the original.

and I did not use algebra once. :hmm:

I just got the regular gasket the store sells, cut a groove in it for the wire. Removed the heater from the old gasket and riveted it to the new gasket. Sealed the groove with Permatex. Think it's gonna work.

Would any one happen to have the insulator, gasket that goes under the carb on the '86 2.8? Does any one know if the Chevy units had one? or just Jeep. official name intake manifold heater insulator. 10174801. If I can't find a good one no biggy. I'll just run without it.

I'm running four Jeeps with the 2.5. Three of the four have over 100K on them, all original. There are more powerful engines out there but not more reliable. It probably takes me 2 seconds longer to go from 0-75 than a 4.0.

They sell chrome by the roll in the duct tape aisle :) Now that is something I never even thought about.

Try running +12 volts straight from the battery to the pump.Verify the pump is OK or not. -
Diagnosing Fuel Pump, 88 4.0
jimoshel replied to JeepsOLot's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
There should be 12 volts at the pump. Check your grounds, especially the one on the firewall. Then the connectors, looking for crud, corrosion. -
Should mention, make sure there is less tan a half a tank of gas or it will spill out when you remove the pump.
-
No. There is enough room to remove the unit by tilting it. Remove the ring that holds everything. The wires go to a plug that you unplug. Clean the area first so you don't get dirt in the tank.
-
Two hours. . I have replaced the pump without removing the tank.

Comanche fuel pumps are available from any of the auto retail outlets. Auto Zone has them for between $50 and $75. Never heard of hem being referred to as fuel sending units. A fuel sending unit is what sends information to the gas gauge telling you how much gas you have.

I worked on Kwajalien , Marshall Islands, for several years. All the vehicles there were painted with a tar like substance to forestall the rusting. It helped by maybe 6 months. Biggest problem was brushing up against the darn things and getting the tar smeared on your clothing. It didn't wash out. They never tried to salvage any of them. After 3 years they loaded them up on a barge and dumped them into the lagoon.

I think he wants to be a comedian and the ad was just practice.

^^^^^ What they all said. From your description, the truck is worth $800 max.

Frankly, I don't think the guy really wants to sell. He just wants to see his Jeep in print.
