Softies look cool on small trucks. Years ago I had a neighbor that built a soft top for his 4x4 Toyota. He build a rigid aluminum frame out of square tubing and had a tent/canvas shop fit and sew the cover for it. Looked good on the truck and was light enough to be installed and removed by himself. Sorry, no pix.

Not sure why Geonovast said you'll have to change the brakes. If they need to be changed you might as well go disc. With a little modification the rear disc off a ZJ will work on a 8.25. All you have to do is open up the hole in the center of the backing plate to fit over the larger bearing housing. As for your perches, they'll need to be relocated to 42". (center hole to center hole) Pretty sure the front or pinion of the 8.25 is 1 inch longer than the 35. Do you have a lift? If so, how much? If you have enough lift that inch probably won't hurt you. (Lift increases the distance from the trans to the pinion) If stock height, you'll probably need to cut your shaft about an inch. The only other required mod that comes to mind has something to do with the e-brake cable and what you have to do to hook it up. I don't remember exactly what has to be done but I think it has to do with the MJ and XJ having different length cables and cable ends. (don't hold me to that) I have a 8.25 sittin in my garage waiting to be installed. I ask all the same question prior to buying it. Hence my being able to answers some of your questions. Good luck with it.

In 1980 I bought a brand new two wheel drive version off the show room floor. It was called a Spirit. I loved that car. Ended up having to sell it in 1985/86. In recent years I've been looking for another one except with the AMX package. Talk about hard to find. I'll be lucky to find a regular Spirit. Anyway, I'd buy tha thing or try to find another one like it if for no other reason because they are getting very rare. Every now and then I see the 4 door station wagon model but very seldom do you see the 2 doors. The Eagle was built from 1979-1987 and the Spirit was built from 1979-1983 Good luck.

I don't know, yall seem to be a pretty tough crowd so I think I'm gonna gracefully bow out of this debate before I get my @$$ handed to me. How bout this ........ There was no accident and I have no idea who's Jeep that was I took pix of. :dunno: Also, if anything like this was to ever happen again, yall or should I say "you guys" will be the last to know about it. :rotf: LOL!!!

Apparently we're gonna have to agree to disagree. As for not letting him drive for a while, he's 24 years old, lives in his own apartment and bought the vehicle with his own money. I can't exactly bend him over my knee anymore and taking the keys to his wrecked vehicle would be pointless. Instead, I chose to loan him my truck so he could get to work this week. As for booze being involved, your right. He drank a couple of beers at around 7:00. (six hours prior to the accident) Careless and wreckless huh. So that means if your driving down the street and an oncoming car comes over into your lane and the only option you have to avoid a head on collision is to hit the curb ...... your driving carelessly and wrecklessly. Tha fact that you risk your own life to protect someone elses means nothing. Am I missing something here? How bout the fact that just maybe it was the other vehicle driving careless and wreckless??? Darryl wasnt the one driving in somebody elses lane. He did what he had to do. If in your opinion his quick thinking to prevent a head on was driving carelessly and wrecklessly then I hope he continues to do so if thats what it takes to prevent having head on collisions. Come to think about it, maybe your right. He should have grabbed the wheel, grit his teeth and gone head on into the car that was in his lane. Then it would have been their fault for failing to yield right of way and you wouldnt be accusing him of careless wreckless driving. Of course it might not have mattered since he and the occupants of the oncoming vehicle might have been killed in the process. That would have been much less careless and wreckless. In my opinion, right now your the one being careless and wreckless by voicing any kind of an opinion about how he was driving. Nether of us were there but I'm positive I know my son and how he drives a lot better than you do. Have a nice day. One more thing. Your saying its "different" based on where you roll a vehicle doesnt explain how or why its different. In both cases there were no witnesses, no real property damage and nobody other than yourself was injured. Your gonna have to do better than "different" to convince me. Lets try another one you may be more familiar with. Your driving down an icy residential street and you slide into the curb hitting a light pole. The pole isnt damaged and your vehicle although wrecked is still drivable. Are you gonna sit there and call the police or drive home? And don't tell me again how thats "different". You did just have a wreck on a residential street.

I am very glad your son is OK but that is DEFINITELY fleeing the scene of an accident. Really? OK, suppose this would have happened out on some country road where again there was no property damage other than to your own vehicle. Are you trying to tell me you would call the police then too? I think not. With that being true, what's "the" difference? "The" only difference I see is you ended up in a ditch instead of a yard. But by any means possible you go right ahead and call the police and sit there till they come making certain to have that accident added to your driving record and insurance premiums. Or, you could back out of "the" ditch and drive a mile down "the" road to your house and call it a night. Its a no brainer to me and like I posted before "the" police obviously don't consider he fled since they've yet to contact him about "the" accident. Yes, its a good thing there weren't any children playing on the sidewalk at 1:00 am in "the" morning and that nobody else was injured. Yes, he was driving a little faster than "the" 30mph posted speed limit. But regardless of his speed if it hadn't been for "the" oncoming car driving into his lane he would have continued down "the" street and wouldn't have had "the" accident. ====================================================================================================================== With all due respect; This thread wasn't intended to be up for debate. I have no desire to make excuses for my son nor do I have the desire to defend some of yalls criticism about the accident or for that matter how I use or spell tha word "the". I didn't know this was a speech class or I'd been entered into a spelling bee. This threads only intent was to inform you we had lost a Jeep from our family. NO, it wasn't an MJ but a Jeep just "the" same. :( I/we appreciate and thank you for your concerns of well being for Darryl and the loss of his Jeep. "THE" END.
-
:rotf: You aint from around here are ya??? Down here more often than not we pronounce "the" as "tha". Its just southern slang. I spell it tha way I'd say it if we were face to face. There's times where "tha" doesnt fit or sound right. Like in front of a word that starts with a vowel. For example; "The" engine did "tha" same thing again. What can I say? It works for us.

Taking a few pix is probably a good idea. Thanks. We also have street parking and the same thing happens all tha time. Some people don't give a sh-t if you have tha right of way or not. They just keep coming forcing you to stop. Done properly there's enough room for two cars to pass each other even with a parked car. But then there's those who think they need tha whole frickin road. We always have vehicles parked in front of our house. I sit on tha front porch sometimes and watch all the idiots challenge each other for right of way to pass um. Its like their playing a game of chicken to see who's gonna yield to who. I'm surprised there arent more wrecks like my son had. Yeah, I think Darryl was not only driving too fast but aggressively as well. He should have known better than to assume he was gonna be given right of way and slowed down possibly avoided the accident. As they say, hind sight is always 20/20.

Yep. Even though the damage was very minimal he wasnt to happy. Most of the damage done to tha Jeep was caused by his driveway and as such did minimal damage to his yard. There was a couple of clumps of grass torn out between tha curb and tha sidewalk and some scratches on his driveway. Tha yard itself was hardly damaged at all. In fact, there was actually more grass torn out between tha curb and sidewalk of his neighbors yard than there was of his. Having never ask if my son was OK, he wanted to know if my son had insurance. It kinda pissed me off that he was apparently more concerned about his damn grass and a few scratches than he was for my sons well being. Tha guy was being a total @$$ about tha whole thing. Having called the police, he told um that Darryl (my son) had fled tha scene of the accident. Nether Darryl or I consider that he fled tha scene of an accident since there wasnt anybody else involved and there wasnt any real property damage to speak of other than to his Jeep. Apparently tha cops think tha same way. They have Darryls contact information but havent contacted him about the accident. When I went to tha scene tha next morning I could hardly tell there had been a accident there. That morning happened to be garbage day and the home owner had already put all tha parts and pcs that came off tha jeep at tha curb to be picked up. It was all gone by tha time I got there. Darryl wasnt with me when I went to see where it happened. Without those clups of grass missing from between tha curb and sidewalk I wouldnt have been able to find where it happened. Screw the ole bastard. If he starts any sh-t about it, I'll show him what a torn up yard is supposed to look like. LOL!!!

He's not. It was his Jeep. I just hope that its loss and knowing how lucky he was that nobody else got hurt has taught him a couple of hard lessons. Me too on both. Just one problem. Now that its totaled and he doesnt have his 383 stroker in his Yukon runnin yet, he's gonna need to borrow my MJ to git to work next week. :help: I'm thinkin if he's lucky I'll let him drive that XJ sittin there. We havent quite figured all of it out yet but from what he claims and from what I can tell after seeing where it happened ..... He was in residential neighborhood going about 40mph around a fairly long curve in tha street. There was a car parked at tha curb on the opposite side of tha street and another car coming down tha street toward him. The car coming toward him should have given him right away but instead kept coming. In doing so they were in his lane so he had to hit tha curb to avoid a head on. Tha curb blew out his front right tire causing him to start sliding sideways into tha grass and then back out into tha street on now wet tires thanks to tha wet grass. Since he was on a curve in tha street and still sliding, he hit tha curb again just before somebodies driveway. Impacting tha curb while sliding sideways tha Jeep rolled. It rolled across tha sidewalk and across somebodies driveway barely missing a new Honda Ridgeline. It came to a stop on its wheels with tha front of tha Jeep about 10 feet from their front door. In a state of shock not realizing what had just happened and tha Jeep still running, he put it in reverse, backed out of tha yard and drove about a mile to his apartment. Since then we've loaded on tha trailer its on and brought it to my house till we figure out what to do with it. Insurance you ask??? He only has liability. Oh, the other car that caused it all ......... kept going. :fs1:
-
Other than being a little banged up he's OK. To bad we can't say tha same for his Jeep. It did a complete roll over landing right side up with 4 blown out tires. It was still running when it came to a stop so he backed out of the peoples yard it landed in and drove it about a mile home.
-
Yep, thats them. Drove about 50 miles on um today with no problems.

YOU??? What about me??? I havent had a headache like this since I was trying to figure out what frickin tires to buy. :wall: LOL!!!

Those 96 ZJ injectors aughta work just fine after all. "The injector flow rate varies as the square root of the pressure drop across the injector. The stock '91-'95 4.0 injectors are rated at 22lb/hr @ 43psi fuel pressure, so at 39psi they flow ( sq. rt.(39/43) x 22.0 = 21.0 )." In my case, I have 10 lbs less fuel pressure than what they say a 96 is supposed to have. (1996-1999 / 49psi / 23.2lb/hr) (1987-1990 / 39psi / 18.6lb/hr) So based on the formula above; If 4lbs less fuel pressure only gives you a 1lb/hr loss of flow, then a 10lb loss in pressure should only give you a 2.5lb/hr loss of flow. By that formula based on having 39lb of fuel pressure those 23.2lb/hr injectors should give me a 20.8 lb/hr flow rate. Thats an increase of only 2.2lb/hr of flow rate over the stock 18.6lb/hr rate. No problem. It aughta run fine. Perhaps a little better. .

Is that law nation wide or just in OH? I've towed numerous vehicles that didnt have any tags at all. Never been ticketed for. (don't know anybody who has) I've always thought since tha dolly itself has lic tags you were good to go.
-
I agree with gl1200aman. Rent/barrow a tow dolly, remove tha plow, remove tha rear drive shaft, make sure tha rear tires are good enough to make tha trip and git on down tha road. I've used a dolly several times and was amazed at how well they work and how easily they pull.
-
Thanks for the info. It answered my question. NO!!! The 96 injectors won't work in my 88. :( Reckon I better git back top work since I now have two injector rails to R&R. I've already pulled all the injectors out of my truck once thinking I had an o-ring leak. Replaced all of the o-rings only to find out it's the injector itself thats leaking. :wall: Thanks again.
-
Is it a tick or a knock? Big difference in determining what it might be. You claim it runs fine but have you done a compression test?
-
Can anybody tell me what the difference is in 1988 4.0 injectors and 1996 4.0 injectors??? I'm thinkin there's a slight difference in flow rates. If so, how much??? I have an injector on my 88 4.0 thats leaking. I have a full set of injectors out of a 1996 ZJ sittin in tha tool box. What would be tha "pros" or "cons" in putting those 96 ZJ injectors in my 88 MJ? Pending the answer from above, I was thinkin about taking an injector out of my 89 XJ to replace tha one thats leaking in my 88 MJ. Then temporarily replace tha one I took out of the XJ with one of the ZJ's so the XJ will still run good enough to be moved as needed.

:agree: But good luck finding one. There's several guys on here including myself that intend to build our own. Here's a thread about it; viewtopic.php?f=2&t=23543

Don't you mean a receiver hitch that bolts to the frame and will except a drop receiver??? If so your answer is NO. Not any more. Only options are to build your own, have one built for you or try to find one in a junk yard. Oh, there is one other option if don't intend to tow anything heavy. http://www.harborfreight.com/5000-lb-ca ... 67158.html You can bolt one of those to the bottom of your step bumper. Warning!!! That thing may be rated for 5000lbs but your bumper isn't. I wouldnt tow anything much heavier than a small trailer with a ATV, jet ski or snow mobile on it. If you truck is lifted and you need to use a drop receiver to level tha trailer, every additional inch of drop will muliply tha amount of leverage pulling down on your bumper. Basically tha same effect as using a cheater pipe. Longer tha pipe or in this case drop, tha more leverage that'll be pulling down on tha bumper. I have one similar to tha one pictured above made by Curt. My truck has a 6" lift so I had to get a 5 1/2" drop receiver. First time I tried to tow a trailer my whole bumper started twisting downward. No matter how tight I tightened tha three bolts holding the bumper to tha frame, they wouldnt hold tha load and or the additional leverage created by the 5 1/2" drop receiver. I ended up having to spot weld my bumper brackets into place. Even after spot welding tha brackets I try to minimize my tongue weight and avoid having to make fast stops.

I need a rear drive shaft for an 88 short bed 4x4 with an AW4. Prefer something local to the Houston area but will pay reasonable shipping charges. (assuming its cost effective verses having my 2x4 shaft shortened) :dunno: Thanks. Robert
-
Screw it. I'm thinkin I'll just take a chance on tha trans and t/case thats in the XJ. Not only is that tha most cost efficient for me right now, I know everything will bolt up. And who knows, I've had AW4's last over 250K. Maybe this one has more life left in it than I think. I'll do a service on it, replace tha seals and cross my fingers. As for what to do with the XJ ..... My wifes brother needs something to drive for a while so I'll stick tha 2x4 trans thats currently in my truck in it keeping it drivable till I decide what to do with it. Anybody got a rear drive shaft for MJ with a AW4?
