I'm looking for the shift linkage, both the body and the transmission mount. This would be the one for the AX15 and NP231. I have the shifter and plate for the inside of the vehicle, but not the cable and mount for the under carriage.

I am converting an AW4 to an AX15 and I need the floor cover. It's listed as part # 53005141 Anyone switched to an auto from manual or have a donor with this part? Thanks!

It's part # 52003929, the cross member I just found the other bracket on eBay, so I'm good there.

89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd to 4wd questions
dkmcgowan replied to dkmcgowan's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Another question... I ran 235/75/15 tires... I know stock 5 speeds were 3.07 gears and in 89 the tires were 1 size smaller than 235, I think. So if I decided to go manual, I'm thinking I would keep the 3.55 gears and add a 3.55 front axle, with either manual or auto... The question is with manual will I like this? I know it will get up and go a little faster with a 5 speed and 3.55 gears, but will it hurt highway driving up around 75 in 5th? All my research is mainly people liking 3.55 gears, but they are also adding larger tires like 31"s, etc... thanks! -

89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd to 4wd questions
dkmcgowan replied to dkmcgowan's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I found this 93 Cherokee, 5 speed, but with a 4 cylinder. I know the bell housing would be different, but would the cross member, transmission mounts, shift plate, clutch/brake assembly, and some other parts all work on 89 Comanche for the conversion? http://atlanta.craigslist.org/antidisestablishmentarianism/cto/5106992115.html Thanks! -
89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd to 4wd questions

So my friend also has a good AX15 to hook up to the NP231 and I'm going back and forth on staying with automatic or going to manual. So if I was to go to manual, these are the additional steps I have found during my research, does anyone know of anything I missed? The front/rear drive shaft will be different sizes with a manual Same thing with the spline count, get a matching AX15 to your NP231, also better with newer model with external slave cylinder Find a new pedal assembly that includes a clutch from a Comanche or Cherokee from 84-90, should bolt right up? Need new clutch cylinder, should have dimples on the firewall where it should mount Will have to short two pins in the automatic transmission connector to disable neutral safety switch Have to hook up the reverse lights somehow to the manual? Do the same with the speedometer cable as above Need a different cross member for an AX15, one from a 2wd or 4wd should work? You then have to move it's location, but there should be a separate set of holes or dimples to thread new mounting holes on the frame? There is some other bracket people talk about that mounts to the AX15 and then to the cross member? I would have to get a new shift plate for the transmission hump because the automatic one will not work? Same 4wd shifter and plate as the automatic? This seems to complicate the job, but not too much... I'm going to start by putting in the sold one piece non vaccum Dana 30 front axle because that part is shared between both projects. Then probably drive for awhile and decide. Thanks for the help! -
89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd to 4wd questions

Thanks everyone, great info! What about the 4wd indicator light, which isn't that important, but curious. I assume I can wire up something on transfer case to the wires on firewall for dash light? -
89 Comanche Eliminator 2wd to 4wd questions
dkmcgowan replied to dkmcgowan's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I forgot one thing, how to get the 4wd light working properly when you go with a one piece axle and remove the vacuum stuff. I know in 89 the axle had a line to a vacuum switch which triggered the 4wd light. I assume the light is still in my cluster even though it came with 2wd, but not sure how to trigger it to come on. -
I know this topic has been covered a bunch and I have gathered tons of information, but still have a few questions. I have a 1989 Jeep Comanche Eliminator 4.0L, automatic with the AW4, with a Dana 35 3.55 rear axle, 2wd model. It's 6ft SWB version. First question, was the Eliminator in 89 even offered in 4wd ever? I plan to do the NP231 with another AW4. I know I need to get those to match and pre-91 are all 21 spline and after are 23 spline. I have a newer XJ matching set that should bolt right up to the back of the 4.0L. I also know I need a front axle. After research here, I'm thinking a late 90's XJ Dana 30 front axle that is the solid single piece without the vacuum stuff. From what I have read this type of axle will bolt right up with no rigging or modifying needed? I know I will then need a front drive shaft, there are tons of them available, part number 53005542. I also know I will need a new rear drive shaft, the one I would need is part number 53004670 and those are not easy to find so far, still looking. I know I can get others and cut them down and/or get a custom one made to the correct length, not a problem. So the next question is since I have the non vacuum front axle and the newer style NP231/AW4, I believe my speedometer is the mechanical kind in 1989 and that combo will want an electrical speedometer, how do others fix this? My dash is working great with the original vehicle mileage, was hoping to not have to change it out. Also, with the newer combo transmission/transfer case should I use the same TCU transmission computer or do I need to have a newer one? Should I keep the electrical harness and connector from my 2wd AW4 to use on the newer 4wd AW4? Will I have issues with the reverse lights working with my system and the newer NP231/AW4? Is there anything else I'm missing? Thanks for the help! I gathered all my information so far from this forum and appreciate the help!

When I got my 89 Eliminator it did not have a spare. I "think" the wheels are correct, but not sure. If they are Eliminator correct wheels, I'm looking for a single wheel or rim so I can mount a spare. Anyone have one laying around? I'm in Atlanta, GA Here is a picture of the wheels I currently have.
-
My Comanche short bed has no cable anymore on the spare tire hoist, so nothing to even attach too. Anyone have one in good shape they are not using or on a parts truck?
-
I was looking for the AX15 cross member and the bracket that attaches to the AX15 to sit in the cross member on the transmission mount. The one for my AW4 is different... But now, I'm considering just keeping it auto with an AW4 and just adding 4wd but staying auto, so my mount would still work. I assumed I wanted manual but bought an auto and it's been a week and it's not bad, so I plan to just drive it for a couple of months and then make the decision.

I did a compression test on my 89 Comanche I just purchased today. It has 126k original miles on the motor. The results are below. They seem fine. The manual says between 120 - 150 and nothing with more than a 30 psi difference. 1 - 130 psi 2 - 135 psi 3 - 135 psi 4 - 140 psi 5 - 125 psi 6 - 125 psi I kinda wish that cylinders 5 and 6 had either the 130 or 135 instead of the 125. These numbers seem normal for 126k miles?

BEAUTIFUL red Eliminator on Ebay

Also I bought the carfax and it had been in a rear end accident, I think it rear ended someone else, which is why new hood and drivers fender for repair, but looking while on the lift, appears it was all just panel damage and the new panels appear to be correct and fitted well. Not sure if they repaired them or got new ones, but had the magnet and doesn't seem to have bondo. -

It's definetly been partially painted, but decent work. Depending on the lighting, it's hard to tell in person except parts being so shiny. I'm going to try and clean up the rest to get it looking closer. I want to fix all badges and such, I ordered the new stickers. What did you see on passenger fender, is the comanche too close to the door? I know some of the bottom sticker is off, but it's pretty close. The owner was a nice guy, older man, bought it from someone when he saw it, never registered it or drove it, or even really looked it over. I was pointing stuff out when I was there and he was totally fine with it. He even called me the next day to make sure it made the drive home and asked how it was and if I still liked it. -

BEAUTIFUL red Eliminator on Ebay
dkmcgowan replied to relyt120's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
I bought this one... I have been looking for quite some time and I went down and offered cash. I recently just joined the club here. I have always been a Jeep guy, my current daily driver is my dads 79 CJ7 w/ 258, he bought that one in 1980. I also rebuilt an 89 Wagoneer and a 79 Wagoneer in the past few years, just sold my 79 Wagoneer after spending 2-3 years rebuilding it and before that my 89 Wagoneer was stolen. I decided I wanted a truck and a non carburetor more modern vehicle with overdrive, so of course, Comanche was the answer! I drove it home no issues and right now I'm spending a week or so draining all the fluids and replacing the exhaust, and going through all hoses and wiring to make sure all is clean... The hood and the left quarter panel appear to have been painted, but the rest seems original I think from what I can tell. It's definitely the original color and been color matched very well. I wanted a 5 speed AX15 with 4wd, but I HATE rust and interior work, I like working on axles and motors and such, so this one's undercarriage was flawless and the interior with some cleaning I believe will look brand new. I plan to convert to 4wd and either stay automatic or go to 5 speed, but later after I drive it longer. I was curious about the word Eliminator being missing, anyone got a good photo of what badges and logos are missing so I can replace them? Also had some chrome tie downs on the bed I believe are after market and rain guards that should not be there. anyway, I will be on here a bunch now getting help... -
I get it, good points... So I if I cannot find a used Comanche one, cheapest safest for fitment route, then maybe a new one is a good idea. I assume I could find the measurements they will need somewhere on the site, will try to find them.
-
That was my plan, head to junkyard and get a better shaft to cut down and rebuild. I know I can do that route, figured might as well ask here in case someone is parting one out. I'm also looking out for comanches being parted out in the area, another good way to find them if you get lucky.

I'm looking for a rear driveshaft for my 89 Comanche. It's currently 2wd and I will be converted it to 4wd. So it would need to be a rear driveshaft, for an AW4 with an NP231, with a rear Dana 35 axle, with the 6ft bed. I know I can cut my axle down at the shop, which I will do, but I'm not doing the conversion for a 2-3 months and figured I would go ahead and ask, this way I can keep and/or sell a perfectly good 2wd driveshaft if someone needs it.
-
I'm pretty sure you can use any driveshaft from an MJ or XJ for the front Dana 30, but I'm in no rush to run out to a pull a part and find one right now, so figured I would see if anyone had one laying around they don't need. I have a 2wd 89 Comanche automatic AW4 and I'm looking to convert to 4wd, so looking for front driveshaft.
