bluish ring for cigarette lighter?
veritas4156 replied to dunl's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I haven't taken one apart in a few months but I'm pretty sure the orange and black pigtail connects to a 194 bulb on cherokees that sits up against the ring to light it. Mine didn't have the light so I grabbed one from a junkyard and used the cherokee one instead. -
How rare are the 91/92 MJ's?

Damn, you beat me to it. I was gonna post mine! -
re centering the steering wheel.
veritas4156 replied to possum's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I actually keep a bucket of leftover ATF and brake fluid and the ends of cans of PB blaster and the like as a parts/tool lubricator/cleaner/deruster. Works better than any other stuff I've ever used. If I have to loosen some really rusty stuff on a car, I grab a solo cup and scoop some of that nasty bucket up and pour it on whatever needs to be loosened on the car and I let it soak for a couple of hours. Normally does the trick quite well. -
disclaimer from my previous post: I'm new to the MJ thing and I loved my YJ dearly for the past few years.

but if it is broke, i like leafs.

you can always pull the sending unit and check the signal by moving the float. Sometimes there's corrosion on the pickup that causes it. If you still can't fix it keep in touch with me maybe once a month. I'm working on fixing up an 86 comanche 2.8L auto for a friend of mine but I think we might end up parting it out. I only drove it from the guy's house to my garage but I think the sending unit is fine.

Seafoam quieted mine down for about a week. After that it came back. Lucas seems to work the best. Another problem I've found with 4.0L motors is the rocker arms tend to bend. I've pulled apart the heads on 3 or 4 of these motors(not all driven by me) and two of the four had bent rocker arms that were causing the noise. Easiest way to find out exactly where the noise is coming from is to take a length of hose and use it as a stethoscope kinda device. One end next to your ear, point the other end at stuff to find noises.

Brake rotor fitment, 1990 MJ
veritas4156 replied to 135Boom's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Did you just happen to have those laying around or did you swap them and take a pic awhile back? -

Screw it, pull the whole axle and swap in a front 44. -

Also check to see if there is a listing for a police package cherokee that year. I work at an advance auto and I had to order in some calipers for a guy because he had the police package. IIRC, the rotors were the same as the regular cherokee, but ya never know. Its not unknown for cars to have the wrong model or year's parts on em. Sometimes I'll have to look back a couple of years to find the right parts. Or in the case of one 2001 Toyota Corolla, I had to look back to a 94. That was weird. When the guy found that out he brought the car back to the Toyota dealership and they gave him a 2002 Corolla instead. -
What about a 4.3 instead of 5.0?
veritas4156 replied to streetjeep2.5's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I know quite a few people that have done a 4.3 and absolutely love it because of the aftermarket possibilities, although these swaps have been in YJs. A friend of mine has a supercharged 4.3L putting out a ridiculous amount of power, and as you said he has space to work under the hood and he doesn't have cooling issues. -
Ridiculously amazing fuel economy. Or your sending unit could be going.

probably a repost but here's the same kinda thread from the JF guys. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f11/budg ... xj-847303/

A lot of shops are full of idiots. 5 quarts is a standard oil change. 4.0s take 6. Happens to my friend every time no matter where he goes. He finally started doing his own oil changes because he got tired of it.

that's priceless.

I always read stickies when I first join a forum. Unless its like on customfighters.com in their general streetfighter discussion section. Over half the threads on the first page are stickies.

best prices on gas tank and fuel pumps?
veritas4156 replied to lostissues's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Just got one in the mail a couple of days ago. I have yet to put it in, probably will next week, but it seems like good construction, right size, etc. Seller's feedback is mostly good, thats what sold me. I got it 1 week after I ordered it, but it shipped from Cali and I'm in NY. -
I guess this is what you do when you get that bed rot above the wheel wells. I'll have to consider that on my 86.

here's a recent thread on JF with a guy trying to put a frame under an XJ. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f37/xj-f ... ld-741237/

How to perform a correct Fuel Pressure Test?
veritas4156 replied to rafiki's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It doesn't have to hold that pressure 100% after you shut it down, but it shouldn't go down below 18 psi or so after about 20 minutes. it should remain there till the next time it is started. -
I have always thought that they were a waste of money but in my digging at the junkyard today I got one and the guy decided not to charge me for it, so no money wasted. Once the weather is consistently cold, I'm gonna run two tanks of gas and record my fuel economy without it, and then do two tanks of gas with it. I'll report fuel economy and if I notice any difference in power. So keep your eyes open around January.

Damn boilermaker, that helps quite a bit. The doors I was trying to pull at the junkyard today are off a 96, and I'm sure I can find switches out of a 2 door somewhere. Oh, and I like the avatar.
