New Toy/Project/Moneydump
USAFAGumby replied to USAFAGumby's topic in Member Projects: Other Cool Stuff
Fuel pump as fallen off once, alternator bracket broke, and the tank has started leaking into the front bags overnight giving it a really bad rake and a dead battery in the morning. Always something to do :laughin: -
Update: Installed with new 231 input gear, pilot bushing, trans mount and Rusty's cross member. Problems found since swap, Will shift into 4th but pops out and grinds as soon as clutch is let out Bucks bad in any gear if let of the accelerator quickly Won't shift into 3rd unless going from 2nd Reverse whines very loudly Idles very low (100-200). Not sure if trans problem or something else though Gonna drop it of at a trans shop Monday and hopefully they can re-rebuild it before I have to drive back to CSprings. Either way I rebuilt and installed my own transmission and it got me 1400miles back home without catastrophic failure! Kinda proud of that, just wish I did it right with out these problems ......

So I made a mistake in input gear selection. Here is what I bought. http://www.advanceadapters.com/products/716053a--jeep-np231-23-spline-input-gear-for-short-transmission-shaft-stick-out-lengths/ I saw that the AX-15 takes a 23 spline short input selector which is why I went with this one. However, now that I look at it the "short" of advanced adaptors is 2.1'' of stick out, which is short transmission shaft length not short input gear. while "short" required according to novak is 1.2". I needed this one. The naming convention on the websites threw me for a $190 loop......... http://www.advanceadapters.com/products/716054a--jeep-np231-23-spline-input-gear-for-long-transmission-shaft-stick-out-lengths/ Gonna call them and hopefully trade since they are the same price. Also just bought the rusty's cross member and transmission mount recommended above. UPDATE: Advanced Adapters has stated that the long 2.1" input shaft would still work with the AX-15 assuming there isn't any serious play on the bearing end. Gonna keep it and see how it goes.

http://www.4wdmechanix.com/Moses-Ludel-Rebuilds-the-Jeep-AX-15-Transmission,-Part-1-Disassembly-Inspection.html Not sure what seems to be the best, I've heard MT-90, and full synthetic 10w-30, and 75w-90 all work. Opinions or personal experience welcome!

That shop is honestly the coolest thing ever. You rent the stall by the hour and full access to all the tools and equipment. They even have a hydraulic transmission cradle which I plan on using later! Also, Thanks!!! I love the look of that bumper. It seems pretty durable too, just needs to be tested out :D
-
I'm going off of what Moses Ludel recommended since that is the instructional I used to rebuild it. He said direct replacement is no longer available, however, Valvoline synchromesh MTF would work.

So that's kinda cool. Only took 10hrs. I'm gonna go eat and take a nap :laughin: (Cases are on too but I don't got a picture of that). I'm thinking of painting it mopar orange, thoughts??
-
Just had mine painted "Fathom" blue. Might be the same blue as the Chevelle's Fathom color but not sure, really just a nice light metallic that MAACO had.
-
Well that took waaayy longer than expected but here it is, fully disassembled AX-15. Now for the hard part......it's just like legos right?
-
Would this linkage work? http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/shifters/sk2xc.htm Also, what about the cross members? Am I going to need to pull one from a junk yard?
-
Right my fault, I have the 23 spline input shaft to fit. Good news about the shift linkage cause I had seen a $171 from novak for a new kit. Not sure what year the AX-15 is from so I'll deal with the PB when it comes. Here is what I found about the transmission mount, http://www.omix-ada.com/transmission-mount-ax5-ax15-transmissions.html I believe it fits both cross members and it is that mount that is different. Thanks for the help!!!

I have read plenty of articles about what is needed, I just want to make sure I got it all right so i'm not stuck at the shop in the middle of this thing ahah. I have a torn down AX-15 that appears to have the right clocking for the XJ. It is internal slave and I plan on keeping it that way right now I plan on keeping the NP231 and replacing the input shaft with a 21 spline from advanced adaptors that I already purchased. I know there is a back up switch difference which I plan on fixing, but it is not critical. I think I need a pilot bushing out of a CJ? An AX-15 transmission mount since apparently the old cross member will work fine. And linkage for the TC, however, I have no idea where to gather the TC parts. Anything I'm missing or any advice before I dive into this project? Thanks for all the help as well everyone!

New Toy/Project/Moneydump

Yup I'm planning on doing most of the work myself, aside from the seats. Been driving it all weekend and this thing rides like a couch on a trampoline! -
With the Comanche getting it's rebuilt AX-15 soon I've decided I'm gonna leave it alone for awhile. But I had to have something to work on in the mean time right? 1967 Chevrolet Caprice Estate. 283 V8 and 2speed PowerGlide. Bagged. Lots of body work and customization nearly ready to be painted. Interior is a hell hole but drives like a dream! I'm thinking glossy black with all the chrome trim and a big chrome roof basket, then refurbish stock blue interior with wood paneled seat backs to make it like a truck bed when the seats fold.

I had a few friends who went there as cadets and they said the restrictions are pretty tight. I have a buddy at Tinker right now going through E3 training as well. USAFA wishes her the best!

Love the bumper! It came with the tow plates but I had to buy the bolts. Since my Jeep had hit a parking pole at some point in its life (previous owner) there was frame and cross member damage so the plates didn't really fit. Couldn't get the steering box bolted back up just right so I'm gonna send it to a shop to fix. Update: Steering box was replaced with NAPA one, drives stiffer now and possibly solved the horrible death wobble I have always had on the white wheels so win win! Bumper still didn't quite match up, inner plates may be welded on later

Old wheels back on. Bumper comes in on Tuesday. Starter finally gave up so new duralast was installed. Found a pair of pliers wedged between the wheel well and air box. Maaco had to have left them there as they are not mine. The paint also has several specs/bumps under it where dust must have fallen onto the body while painting. Then, maaco put the badges on at the wrong height, while the 4.0 badge was put on the lower right of the tailgate nowhere near where it should have gone. Won't be going back there again, and do not recommend  First time waxing the paint, I think it looks pretty good!

Off we go, into the wild BLUE yonder! New front bumper and JeepStickers tailgate sticker coming in soon!

2015 CC Western Pow Wow

Really like this idea! I'm in CSprings and somewhat constricted in my college schedule. Basically anywhere in 500mi on a holiday or 3-4 day weekend I'd be there! When is Moab again? Does it cost anything? -
Tankertom's 89 Comanche
USAFAGumby replied to M1A1TankerTom's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
That is so cool! Looks super sturdy -
found some rust under the fender Here are the focals as well.

It was custom made by CarToys. I didn't want to mess around with the audio and screw it up given the components I used. They did a really good job, seat still slides back completely and the grill on the sub protects it.

JL Audio 12'' 2ohm 300W Alpine 4 channel amp 100W + 350W subout Focal 5.25'' 120W components + dynamat doors Kenwood Receiver It is very well balanced but can be loud when I want it to be :rock on: . The box and amp were mounted up and drilled into the cab to keep them off the floor, and the components fit behind the grills with the tweeters in the usual spot. Overall I couldn't be happier with the setup and I am very excited!! (Keeping with the blue theme in the truck the receiver and amp lights are both blue  )
