Right on, I'll start a never-ending thread of questions. Welcome to the club! Nice looking MJ  . Post away with the questions! That is what the ComancheClub and the Tech section is here for  Thanks; I've already started with the questions.

Undoubtedly, I'll find something else to ask questions about. I appreciate the help; I'm new the the RENIX arena, as my 95 XJ has the 'modern' feel to it. :D Now, for some questions: Q1. How can you narrow down the cause of an AC issue? Recharge vs. replacing parts Q2. How do you check the level of coolant in a closed system? I think mine is low. Q3. There are 2 temp senders, right? One for the gauge; one for the computer? Q4. Looks like I'm missing some pieces here?:

Right. Looks like I'll be hitting up PaP sometime to replace my rubber.

Awesome. Thanks. I know that with XJs, if you use 97+ door weather stripping in a 96- front doors, it will seal much better. Is this the case with the MJ, too?
-
I assume the rubber wipers that clean your windows when they roll down are the same as on an XJ? I am also assuming all the weather stripping is the same as well? Most of my window/door rubber is in kind of bad shape, and wanted to verify my assumptions before I start looking. TIA.

The goal is for this to be a very solid DD. I'd like to turn this thing into nice shape. New paint and such. Make it a nice Mall Crawler! I think my first plan of action is to get it detailed, inside and out. Then, get the major stuff fixed, and slowly work on the minor (unimportant) things as well. My first four goals are: Fix the A/C, Figure out why the front turns don't work, Try to find and stop the oil leak, Figure out why the temp gauge is reading so low. After those three: Rear bumper+tailgate, Speakers, Cosmetic touch-ups. Long term: New paint, New tires, New seats.

1988 MJ Pioneer. 167,xxx miles, 2WD, I6, AW4, D30/35, $900. Alright, so she's a little ugly. The clear coat has faded/is fading. The bed is all scratched up (it will be getting Rhino Lined). There is no tailgate (I'm looking for one). The rear bumper is bent up. Minimal rust on the body -- mainly in spots where the paint has been scratched off. No discernible rust on the frame/underbody. Temp gauge doesn't read proper temperature. I think it's low on antifreeze. There is none in the overflow bottle (closed system). Heat blows HOT, though. AC does not work ... maybe the system needs a recharge. How do you know if it needs a recharge, or if the compressor is shot? Idles high in 'Park'. Crazy oil leak(s) -- the whole underbody is coated in oil; of course it drips on the exhaust too, so it smokes. Shifts nicely, and the engine is powerful. Possible missing vacuum hoses. I also don't think the front turn signals work, but the rear do. When the headlights are turned on, the clock goes away but the right signal indicator in the dash stays lit. Grounds and battery terminals need to be cleaned. The speakers in it are so massively sucky. Sliding rear window with no handle. No headliner/dome light. Courtesy lights in the 'B' pillar don't light up. Is wired for trailer lights and has 2" ball. What's the towing capacity of an MJ? I think that's it for now.

yelp. Did they come in other trim levels too, or just the E?
-
Did the Eliminator package have that middle console on the floor stock?
-
Cool, good to know, thanks.

I bought the "roll bar" off jbhill. It is an aftermarket aluminum one. It was in a Ranger at one time. I cut it down and made it a little wider to follow the MJ lines better. I debated on selling it at one point but, it is starting to grow on me. Interesting. I've seen a few MJs with them, so I thought it was some factory option. I like it, though.

That 'rollbar' that's in the bed, is that a stock feature on the Eliminators?

Some of the big choices to make when looking for an MJ (organized roughly in order of difficulty to change): -Solid body or rustbucket -long or short bed -4.0 or 2.5 -stick or auto -A/C or not -2wd or 4wd Anything else is fairly easy and you can parts-shop XJs and MJs in the junkyards to build the comanche you want. Don't think that you need an Eliminator to get all the goodies. A solid base model truck will usually suffice. Be sure to ask before buying anything. There are a bunch of minor changes over the year that can make for major headaches later on. Thanks for the advice. I think I like the way LWB look better than SWB, but it's not a deal breaker for me. This'll be a DD/Trash hauler. I have an XJ to beat the crap out of, heh. I definitely want the 6 cyl, I like having power. AT or MT doesn't matter, but I gotta have A/C. It gets miserable in TN.

Cool. I've noticed almost all the MJs on CL never list what trim level it is ... this should help me narrow it down more easily.
-
Cool brochure, that helps a lot; thanks!

Name is Alec, but can't post pics since I'm at work. A few of you may know me from NAXJA. No pics of the MJ, since I haven't found Ms. Perfect yet. I just sold my Ranger to get one, now I just need to find one ASAP. As soon as I get one, though, I'll picture lady of the night it up.

I searched, but did not find an answer (bad search terms, maybe?). I'm sure it's on here somewhere, but apparently I'm too thick to find it (which makes me sound retarded with my 2nd post). What're the differences between the different trim levels, i.e. Pioneer vs. Eliminator. TIA
