  1. I don't like using my phone either, especially since my boss has told me to not take personal calls at work unless it's an emergency. However, since there is no 'binding contract' with CL sellers and it's almost always 'first come first serve' you need to be on the ball. E-mail, although a very popular form of communication these days, is slow and tedious for most people. It lacks the personal connection you make with someone like a phone call or face-to-face meet-n-greet does. E-mail, as well as text messaging, gives people a way to hide themselves. I will admit - I don't respond to every single one of my e-mails, mainly because I get so many of them, but I will answer or return a phone call 95% of the time.
  2. It's not the router that is the problem, it's the firmware. Netgear firmware is crap and always has been. Linksys is a lot better and they tend to be easier to setup. I don't use the stock firmware on any of my routers because they limit the full functionality of the installed hardware. If you're tying to setup a wireless network to transmit over long distances, I highly recommend you look into using DD-WRT firmware on your routers. I used this 3rd party firmware to convert a couple of old routers (that I was about to throw into the trash) into a wireless repeater to connect my home and my shop (they are about 2500 feet away from each other). It does take a little bit of setting up and if you're just looking for a plug-it-in and go, then this is obviously not the solution you want, but I've had my long range wireless network up and running flawlessly for over three years on about $150 worth of "consumer" hardware and a days worth of work, but I have about a half mile between the two buildings - that may not be the case with you.
  3. How come that plate isn't lined up with the frame?
  4. I've been getting fed up with Craigslist lately. If it wasn't for the occasional deal that I grab every now and then, I would have deleted it from my bookmarks a while back. My biggest gripe are the people that list an item, don't provide a phone number or any means of contact information other than the randomly generated CL e-mail, but then either ignore or are too lazy to respond to any e-mails that they get. Why bother taking the time to list your item for sale if you aren't actually going to put forth an effort to sell it? What I don't like about CL is that there is no binding contract to sell an item once you've listed it. You can throw an item up just to see how much interest it gets without ever having any real notion of selling something. It's like going to a store and finding an item at a good price, then going to the cash register to pay for it, and then they take it back from you and tell you it's not really for sale. Part of being a buyer on CL is being able to sniff out the idiots on there who have no real intention of selling something and moving on. When I was looking for my dog, I used the CL community ads to see if there was anyone trying to rehome a Siberian Husky or Alaskan Malamute. I found a 6-month old Malamute about an hour from me that a girl was trying to rehome because she was moving. No phone number listed, so I sent an e-mail with my name and phone number included. I get an e-mail back from her saying that she'd like to talk to me some more and see if I was a good fit for her puppy, but she didn't provide a phone number. So I e-mailed her some info about myself. She sends a reply back saying that I sound like a perfect fit, but again, doesn't provide a phone number or address or anything where I can get in touch. I send an e-mail back that says I want to meet the puppy and close the deal and ask for a phone number and/or address. I get another e-mail back that again explains that I'm a good fit for her dog. Great, so lets get this done already. I continue to ask for another means of contact besides her e-mail and all I get are more questions about myself, my home, prior experience, etc etc. At this point I told her I was sick of beating around the bush and would go look elsewhere since she was just wasting my time. Found another dog on CL, owner called me within minutes of sending an e-mail and I picked him up later that day. A week later, I get an e-mail back from the other girl asking if I was still interested and guess what, she provides an address to see the dog and a phone number to contact her at...too bad she missed the boat, although I'm sure she wasn't devastated that she didn't have to give her dog away...
  5. With the highest population density in the country, I'd think there would be more drunken idiots in XJs...
  6. You're getting a hell of a lot better deals than I am on parts Cherokee's. I'm looking at a '99XJ w/145K this weekend for $750, but there isn't a single salvageable front end part on it.
  7. Not bad at all for $200. Those rims are the dark grey Ecco's.
  8. I had a pair of front wheel bearings that were so firmly implanted into the hubs that I used a stubby piece of 3/4" steel rod and wedged it between the rounded part of the axle yoke and the axle hub. I then used the torque of the steering wheel (which is more than you think) to get the wheel bearing moving. Once I broke it free, I was able to tap it out with a hammer. Kind of hard to explain, should have taken a picture...it makes perfect sense when you see it.
  9. I had those mirrors on my Sportruck and I despise them for two reasons: 1) They look like they should be off of some early 1980's Ford pickup (c'mon Jeep, a little originality would have been nice). 2) They put four very large holes in the doors so that when someone, like me, who wants to put a nice set of mirrors on, I'm left with four gaping holes on each door.
  10. Ah, I didn't know there ulterior motive for hanging onto that project YJ. Don't have kids myself - that I know of, anyway - but I understand the sacrifices that must be made for one's kin.
  11. The bottom left mirrors are commonly found on full steel door YJ Wranglers, FYI.
  12. Do what I did - trade your '91YJ for a '92MJ.
  13. Yes sir. I torqued the bolts on the pan and called it a night - that took a lot longer than I thought it would. After work today, I'll change the oil filter, put some fresh oil in and cross my fingers!
  14. I got it out tonight. I just kept at it with a 3/16" brass rod tapping on both sides of the seal before it finally budged. I tried a 1/8" rod, but the amount of force I needed to use to get the seal to budge was just bending it. New seal is in, main bearing caps are all torqued down per the service manual. Got the oil pan in the parts washer just about ready to go back on. Should have it fired up tonight just in time for the weekend. Thanks fellas!
  15. After I made my initial post, I went back underneath the truck with a steel punch and did exactly that, but it didn't budge. I stopped before I let my frustration get the best of me since a steel punch near a crankshaft is not the place you want to be when you're starting to get angry. I'll try it again tonight...
  16. My Sportruck has it, but the bottom portion is no longer attached. My Pioneer doesn't have it, but the radiator crossmember does have the two holes for the rivets. My '92MJ and '98XJ don't have the tags and also don't have the holes for the rivets and my '98XJ IS is a salvage title vehicle.
  17. This is by far the hardest rear main I've done yet. Original RMS with 225K+ miles on it and hard as a rock. Tried all the tricks in the book - loosened all of the main bearings and dropped the crank down a bit, hit both sides of the RMS with a brass drift trying to get it to budge and nothing. Any other secrets? This thing is STUCK and I need this truck back on the road by the weekend. Thanks!
  18. My '88 SporTruck has this, too. I've run the VIN on that truck when I had AutoCheck and it came back squeaky clean. I also have that truck torn down to just a shell and there is a no evidence of any major accident that would brand it a salvage title. I really don't know about a theft recovery, though. I have a '98XJ that WAS a theft recovery and has a big 'ole SALVAGE across the title does not have such a tag on it. I can check my '88 Pioneer tonight for a similar tag...seems like we have a handfuls of '88 MJs with these tags and no evidence of a salvage title...
  19. 1992 Jeep Comanche Base /uploads/archive/737d3ec1905454130c56495ab93dd093/ef81d8cb8ad56a5060d50f975351ec19.jpg 4.0L HO/AX-15/2WD/D35/SWB Build date: 3-92 Current Location: Central NJ Status: Daily driver work truck Notes: White exterior, grey interior, cloth bench seat, three-pane rear window Current owner: Not me
  20. It's not. I was working on it over the summer but have gotten extremely distracted from that project. I need a hitch for my new MJ so it may rejuvenate my motivation to get this done.
  21. Great pictorial guide. I used it when I cleaned my 2 dr xj seats. Unfortunately with a bench seat you cannot get to the bottom of those clips like you can on a bucket. The foam appears to be glued to the seat frame with zero access to the clips.

    Uncle Pete

Congrats on being the crazy Uncle with all of the Jeeps. That's what my niece calls me, anyway :D
  23. Anyone know how to remove the four black plastic headrest clips on a bench seat? One is broken and I need to replace it, but I can't figure out for the life of me how to get them off. On the bucket seats I have, I was able to move the foam out of the way and squeeze the two clips that hold them in, but the foam on the bench seat looks like it's glued to the frame...
  24. Low mile: '88 Pioneer w/78k High mile: '92 Base w/about 230k My low mile MJ has low oil pressure, overheats, has a possible cracked head, and can barely get me to work 7 miles away. My high mile MJ has great oil pressure, doesn't overheat, runs/shift great, and just made a 450+ mile journey back from Ohio. Seems backwards, doesn't it? This is evidence of what your MJ can be if it's properly maintained. Unfortunately, the PPO of my low mile MJ never changed the oil, greased the front end, or cared to fix anything on it that broke.
  25. The original intent of driving all the way out to Ohio to get this vehicle and drive it home was because I was going out there anyway for my buddy's wedding. Unfortunately, the Wrangler I traded for the MJ developed a power steering leak the weekend before the trip and it took a few days to get the replacement parts in. I did get the parts a couple days before the trip, but I really didn't feel comfortable taking the YJ out there until I had put it through its paces and was confident it would make the trip. So, I had to put the trade off a couple of weeks, bite the bullet, and head out there for a second time. As for MJs being right around the corner from me - not so much and especially not a '92, which is what I've been after for a while. The reason that I went through with this deal is that the PO was willing to accept my Wrangler in as-is condition for the MJ with no money on top. Trying to find someone that would do all of that around me is slim to none. The previous owner did the floor pan repair and it looks as though he did a decent job. We had a big rainstorm last night and when I took the truck to work this morning, I noticed some puddles on the passenger side, so I'm going to pull the carpet and figure out where the leaks are coming from. I'm 95% sure I know where the water is coming in from...
