Yet another towing question....
lil_loco replied to lil_loco's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Something like this work? https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B000HEADH4/ref=mp_s_a_1_9?qid=1462479974&sr=8-9&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=transmission+cooler -
Standard black metal bumper was ordered for mine from crosscanada body parts by the shop. Set me back about 190 cdn after taxes. It is rated 4000lb/500lb but I'm still looking for a separate hitch. Mounts did need to be fabricated for it as it is without them and primarily listed for a mid 90s Dakota. Otherwise looks quite stock and solid.

Yet another towing question....

The rear springs were a full kit for the 4.5" lift from rough country. It's getting a new rear hitch bumper but I'm looking for a decent priced class 4 2" receiver. -

P.s. I hate autocorrect -
Been reading on previous threads about towing but not getting the info I seek and have no intentions to hijack. I have an 87 longbox MJ with 4.5" lift 32" tires 4.0l engine aw4 trans d30/44 combo with 3:55 gearing. The 44 is newer from a 2000 with chromo shafts and oversized brakes albeit still drum it also has a low km positrac. I upgraded the brake booster to a new unit designed for the zj/wj. I am buying a 2008 palamino banshee pup toy hauler equipped wit ebrake and load distribute on bars. Gvwr approx 3800lb. I do plan to put my 86 DT200 on the deck possibly a TM 450cc dirt bike too.... not much else really. Will she handle it? Recommendations to improve hauling (do not suggest another truck). Thanks :)

Last year for my (censored) birthday I splurged on an 87 X model (i6/AW4/231) currently painted white with black duraguard over black interior with vinyl bench seat. It was built up by a girl who loved pink. Pink accents EVERYWHERE!!!! Including the JEEP lettering on the tailgate that I took spraybomb to the moment I got it home. I'm not the type of girl who likes to flex her muscle that way.... I rather prove myself BEFORE you judge my gender. Anyhow.... I decided the truck needs some love after the truck has been trying to kill me on more than a couple occasions: blowing both u-joints in sync at 120kmph on the QEW/403 (but amazingly only losing the driveshaft AFTER safely making it across 4 lanes of traffic to the shoulder and stopping one length ahead of it); driving away from the rear left wheel at 80kmph on a dark 2-lane highway around midnight when the axle shaft snapped (only to find the wheel less than 50ft from the road parallel to where I was able to stop the truck on the shoulder) which won her an axle swap to a fresh build D44; throwing off the front left tire, where all lugs let loose at once, during in-town rush hour (but the wheel ended up under the rocker holding up the truck until I got out to wave down someone to call a tow).... don't worry this is my normal luck and YES regular maintenance and circle checks are done. I have her booked in for a spa-day April 11th. After the soda treatment, and necessary 'plastic surgery' I will be in a predicament..... the fellow doing the work for me has suggested I consider any other colour than white for obvious reasons (I live in South-West-Ontario.... there is no stopping rust unless I hide her in a dry barn). So what colour do I go? I know this becomes a personal choice but I want suggestions from other MJ owners, what colours keep cleaner longer? What colours turn heads? What would be unique but tasteful? Does anyone have actual pictures of the renault racing edition trucks? Thanks :)

87 puked it's np231 rear yoke on the highway....

Yup I only buy long box 4x4 trucks :) I'm happy I'll be swapping shafts in the am if that's the case. I gots me some crazy antiques to rescue -
I'm getting some vibrations coming through the steering when accelerating between 20-70kmph. I also noticed a click/clunk sound when cranking my wheels (turning at intersections and parking) that is starting to increase in frequency. Sound like a chunk of steel sliding across the box but I really feel it in my left foot. I just got this truck and so far I can tell that the previous owner did nothing but drive it (even the oil was sludgy as if unchanged from when they bought it a year before). It is lifted 4.5" with t-case drop. Pushing 265/70/17s. With my limited mechanical knowledge - I am thinking front ujoints are hurting (if not just the left) but is there any other component I should be investigating? How much would it roughly cost to have the repair done? I do not have access to a press or most other common large job tools for that matter.

Thanks mvusse. Bought new sending units. Now I need to find a tachometer from an 88 "red" cluster. I accidently destroyed mine. Also need an odometer mechanism. Anyone got one? -

So I found the vacuum line. Somehow fell off and ended up hiding beneath the air box. I found it while doing the brake booster. YAY! It belonged to the sensor in front of the air box. What is left is the mystery of the gauges: Given that a blue cluster should have been the original and this is assumed from an XJ or newer/younger MJ - suggestions to why the Oil gauge shoots to max and the temp gauge doesn't do anything when the truck is running? Can I fix it? I was analyzing a blue gauge set from my 86 donor truck - its 4cyl ax4. Very different mechanics involved as well. Mostly magnetic/mechanically driven vs. the red cluster which is electronic for most gauges. Could this be why the red cluster does not work in the temp/oil gauges? Gas and battery are fine though. While attempting to fix the odometer that was jammed - speedo worked, trip meter worked, just not the main odometer. I went a little crazy and pulled off the needle to get into the dials. Suggestions for getting it back on and in proper place? I also had to pull the needle off the tach to get to the gear shift indicator to free the cluster. How hard will it be to reinstall and correct that needle? It was the only way to get to the wire that was adjusting the shifter indicator and preventing removal otherwise. I'd take pics but phone is on 2% battery. Thanks for all your replies :) -
Did a search but nothing came up... I've really only worked on or owned long enough to know 2.5l 86s (4x4 ax4/ax5) before I got myself an 87 4.0l. automatic 4x4...... Now I am totally lost. I noticed the rear driveshaft on my 86s is almost twice as thick as the 87's. What othe differnces are there between them? We found one of three vacuum lines that seem to go to the t-body/intake-manifold via a U shaped hard plastic hose isnt connected to anything and I don't know whats missing here as it is definitely sucking (and hissing). The other lines are attached. Does anyone have a list of what lines/components are supposed to be attached to the t-body vacuums? I followed one larger white hose from the junction clip that is just infront of the tbody to the airbox and engine, the other is a smaller black hose that snakes under the air box - brake booster? Which gauge cluster is supposed to be in an 87? The blue or the black/red? Its obvious someone swapped them at one point since the odometer is meddled with and the temp/oil dials don't work. Also the scratches from the tinsnips used to cut out the gear selector panel are obvious. Good effort though. Some genious removed the CAT - is it necessary for function? I am e-test exempt and have no intentions of driving to california. What is the function of the transmission button on the dash that says power/comfort?

Never buy a rig from a buddy unless.... A ) you can be 110% they are going to help you with it and anything that surfaces after the fact B ) you want to end that friendship C ) you without a doubt know what you are getting into and they are pretty much wholesaling it to you

A Question About Bead Balancing
lil_loco replied to banshee's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Seen motorcycles wipe out when the beads go wrong and after it's a hell of a mess to clean out. Almost as bad if not worse than green slime tire inflator. I actually turned away a 5000km set of 2013 mtz's because they had bead balancing and opted for a 20,000km set of duratracs that didn't instead..... solely because I'm frankly unsure of what damage they will cause on a lifted lightweight truck if they went wonky when they can easily cause a veteran rider to drop their heavyweight cruiser in otherwise perfect conditions. -
True point. Guess we will see this weekend when I finally clear the driveway enough to get the truck out. Several other forum threads claimed much smaller when measured at home....
-
No. It's got some bypass? on it. Being 86 means no etest so previous owner may have messed with it. But the system is tight. Blocking the pipe stalls her out quick. IIRC that's good. I picked up a set of like new 31" duratracs. Put them beside my 33" bfg t/a ko (at) and haha they are basically the same height! Maybe only if an inch off! Read up and it seems the bfg run up to an inch or more small?
-
Traded away some TJ doors for new(ish) 31" shoes! Debating it still but thinking about swapping them over to the original turbine rims. Not sure how I feel about the ravine rims.

I don't even think my truck has a proper catalytic right now.....

Well now i won't be so afraid to "make a like noise" with the skinny pedal!
