  1. I corrected my original posts as the difference is two teeth. Since the speedometer gears are in the neighborhood of 30 teeth, one tooth more or less makes about a 3% difference. If (I'm assuming at high speed) you're off about 5mph with the 225 tires, then you have a speedometer gear for 205 tires. I run 235 on a truck that had originally 205 and when the speedometer reads 70 I'm actuallly going 75. Besides changing the speedometer gear (about $60 for the gear, not too difficult to install) there is no calibration possible for the speedometer. There should be a tag bolted to the diff cover with the ratio stamped in it. Even if the tag is still there it is probably not readable anymore because of 27 years of rust. Alternative way is to shift the transmission into neutral, jack up one rear tire and rotate it by hand 2 turns. If the drive shaft goes around three and a half turns you have 3.55 gears, three and three quarter turns is 3.73 and a bit over four is 4.10. My guess is that you have 4.10 gears, but Eagle seems to think 3.73 is more likely. alright, what happens if i end up havin open diffs instead of a limited slip? could that mean i have a different gearin or same math involved, and i was readin my haynes manual and it mentioned a T5 and T4 tranny, along with the AX4 and 5, what's the difference between the two? Redwolf Open diff or limited slip has no effect on gear ratio. Limited slip is basically a clutch system between the spider gears to force power to the other wheel when one wheel is on ice or in mud. Haynes is not an authority on anything. But there is a rumor Jeep may have used T4 and T5 transmissions instead of the AX4 and AX5 when supply was running low in early Cherokees and Comanches. I have never seen one yet, though. i didn't know that, that's nice to know, and i guess the next time i drop my tranny i outta take a pic of it for yall cause it kinda looks like the AX5 but at the same time kinda looks like the T5 in the haynes manual, Redwolf
  2. ya didn't come off rude, and i'm right there with ya tried to learn bout em, that's what i started this thread so i could learn the differences everyone has seen in each MJ and there packages like custom, x, xls, eliminator, pioneer, and chief, it's deffently a fascinatin truck, not somethin ya see too often either, Redwolf
  3. That is the earlier model steering wheel. That came with all '86s to the best of my knowledge. Mine's an '86 Custom and has that very wheel. The 3-spoke sport wheel came later. Except for the fact that I have had two '86 X rigs and they both have had the three spoke wheel (check my build thread in my sig for my current '86 to see it in black even). I've also seen it on countless other '86 rigs around the club and the net. I've never seen that other one so I questioned. Since you both have '86 Customs (base model), maybe it was specific to that trim and the X/XLS got the three spoke then the one you guys have was dropped the next year or only used on the lowest trim. That's my speculation. don't know, all i know is it's what came with my MJ when i bought it, i know nothin bout MJs other than they look cool and i have one and they're hard to find and find parts for that are meant for em Redwolf
  4. That is the earlier model steering wheel. That came with all '86s to the best of my knowledge. Mine's an '86 Custom and has that very wheel. The 3-spoke sport wheel came later. i've seen 86 2.1L MJs with the 3 spoked one with the bolt on look around the center, now i don't know if that's stock or added in, looks sweet though Redwolf
  5. Don't let that be an indication for what it is. Mine is missing it's X badges and I can't find replacements anywhere. My last '86 was missing them as well but I eventually found some. Too bad I didn't yank them back off and keep them. @Redwolf The original engine is the same engine you dropped in basically. THE reason most around here won't touch an '86 MJ, a poorly made GM 2.8L V6. Most replace them with a GM 3.4L since they are the same block design as the 2.8L but better made and more powerful. Also because the 4.0L will not fit in an '86 without some firewall modification. For some idea of how bad the 2.8L is, the 4cyl 2.5L that was offered in '86 made the same hp and torque numbers basically and had better MPG. Only reason my rig still has the 2.8L in it is because the PO had it and the tranny rebuilt 30k ago and stuck a lot of Holley and Edelbrock performance parts on the thing, including an EFI kit. Within the next year though probably, I'll be scrapping it all and swapping in a 4.0L or just scrapping the whole truck once I find one in better shape with a 4.0L. yeah, my dad has a 2.5 in his wrangler, little bit better mileage than i get, but bein that my MJ came stock with the 2.8 i wanted to keep it that way, now don't get me wrong, my next gasoline MJ IS NOT gonna have a 2.8, i might find a way to drop a 4.3 if possible but my next gasoline MJ is gonna be my fun truck, kinda like the MJs that make MJOTM  or who knows, i might just keep the 2.8 or maybe even a 2.5 in the next MJ, Redwolf
  6. i never saw that on my old engine, the previous owner blew the engine when she had the comanche so i dropped a 2.8 v6 tbi engine from a 93 GMC sonoma into my MJ and converted it to carb, Redwolf
  7. that's sweet to know, so in a nut shell i have a 1986 jeep comanche custome, 2.8 173 cubic inch V6 engine with a AX5 5 speed tranny, 7' bed 2WD made in Toldo, Ohio? :) by the way, was the original engine made in mexico and USA? Redwolf
  8. alright but what does the follow mean: W - 6 cyl 173 ci 2.8 ltr (i get the 6 cylinder part but what bout everything else?) W - 5 spd 4*2 (i understand the 5 speed part but what's 4*2?) 66 - Pickup Comanche 4*2 7' bed (pickup comanche is a given but what bought the 4*2 7' bed?) 1 - Comanche "custom" std payload (i'm understandin the custom part from but what's std payload?) 6 - Check digit (what's check digit?) Redwolf
  9. i don't know bout the rims, i got three that match (i'm assumin they're the turbine) and one steel rim, the grille is not spray painted over, i'd be able to tell from touchin it so many times with greasy hands, as far as idiot lights go, i'll have to get back to ya on that one, i know i got 3 of the four main lights on the dash workin, i don't think the gas one will ever work do to it first havin a mechanical fuel pump, my vin number is 1JTWW6616GT189532 is decodin all ya can do or can ya find out all the info on that vin number like accidents, tickets, stuff light that? Redwolf www.vehicleidentificationnumber.com 1 - US J - Jeep T - Truck W - 6 cyl 173 ci 2.8 ltr W - 5 spd 4*2 66 - Pickup Comanche 4*2 7' bed 1 - Comanche "custom" std payload 6 - Check digit G - 1986 T - assembly plant Remaining numbers the serial no. As for history, you should look on car fax or similar. what does all that mean? and i've tried car fax and all that, i can't seem to get a free one, why buy somethin i'll only use once, Redwolf

  11. this is my MJ, inside and out all the way around, i just didn't take pics behide the seat and sorry for the mess, me and my dad were bleedin the clutch slave cylinder and a plastic pivot broke :wall:  Redwolf
  12. my vin number is 1JTWW6616GT189532 is decodin all ya can do or can ya find out all the info on that vin number like accidents, tickets, stuff light that? Redwolf
  13. In 86 there is also the Custom Really the Custom and Base are the same thing from what I understand, just depends who you talk to is what it'll get called. It was the lowest trim option so that to me is the "base" for all other trim levels. In 86 there is also the Custom now i'm really confused as to what comanche i have, my MJ is plan, right now it has a flat black grille and head light "housins", black bumpers, solid red with thin black pin strips, tailgate says JEEP in black, the JEEP emblem on the from is chrome, i have the chrome rods above the doors, head light pull out switch, cig outlight, i have bench sets, solid back glass, mini console, i'll post pictures tomorrow so yall can see what i'm takin bout, Redwolf To screw with things even more, I forgot to mention that my old '86 X had a rear slider but my current decked out X does not. No vent windows or cargo box light on either as well. My current one had the factory bed cover at one time too (stupid snaps are still there rusting my bed). The Jeep letters on the front are always bare metal unless someone painted over them, and the mini console is always there unless you have a full with buckets. Nothing special about the headlight switch or cig lighter as well. The drip rail trim above the door is touchy since even if it was black at one time, the black becomes brittle and peels off so someone could have peeled it off and exposed the bare metal underneath. The window trim is this same way. All the brochures I've seen for '86 had the metal trim above and below the grille, as well as the drip rail, as bare metal. Windshield trim is bare metal as well. Optional chrome like my current X has includes the bumpers, door handles, tailgate handle, mirrors, everything surrounding and including the grille, and tail lights. There is also side molding that could be gotten with a chrome trim line down the middle. There might have also been something special about the XLS interior, but I've never seen one so can't say. The dash facing might have been silver or something, but all the silver ones I've seen just look like someone took silver rustoleum to the black one and they look awful IMO. Mine is black with silver trim lines around each opening, but I think this was a standard thing since all my MJs have been like this including the Eliminators which are the top dog. so it's kinda like the jeep wranglers now, ya have rubicon, sahara, sport, sport s, thinks like that but the only difference there seems to be is the name cause ya could customize it before ya bought it? Redwolf
  14. ok well before i start gettin into all that math, how do i find out my gear ratio, all i know bout my MJ is it has a 2.8 v6, 5 speed manual and it's 2WD, i have no info sticker on the doors, i only got the tire pressure info sticker in the glove box and the cadalatic converter sticker inside the door, i have no idea what axle i have, what type of tranny weather it be AX5, AX4 and so on, Redwolf
  15. In 86 there is also the Custom now i'm really confused as to what comanche i have, my MJ is plan, right now it has a flat black grille and head light "housins", black bumpers, solid red with thin black pin strips, tailgate says JEEP in black, the JEEP emblem on the from is chrome, i have the chrome rods above the doors, head light pull out switch, cig outlight, i have bench sets, solid back glass, mini console, i'll post pictures tomorrow so yall can see what i'm takin bout, Redwolf
  16. that's all nice, why'd they get rid of that, i'd rather have that over the style in my dad's 01 wrangler, straight down is 2WD, up once is 4HI, right and up is N then up again is 4LO, Redwolf
  17. i thought bout droppin down to the 205 but i saw one the other day with those and it just didn't look right to me, plus my dad has so almost new 235s out in the back yard so i was thinkin bout gettin those slapped on when my 225 are done, just a thought though, also how do ya like the firestone destination ATs, i've been lookin at those and the MTs both look really agressive :D   :jump: Redwolf
  18. what is the selec-trac? i tried googlin it but can't find anything, Redwolf
  19. yeah same here, i also tried findin out the history on my MJ and car fax said it had 18 reports, auto reports said 24 so i don't know what to believe, the vin number is: 1JTWW6616GT189532 Redwolf
  20. i learned the speedin issue from my dad when he had a cop gun him before, could my MJ bein stock hight with 235/75/R15s cause it to do 5 over or is that the speedo off from 27 years of never bein touched? Vehicle height has nothing to do with it. Your speedometer is driven by a gear that's turned by the output shaft of the transfer case (or transmission, if you have 2WD). The number of teeth on the speedometer drive gear has to be matched to the tire size and rear axle gear ratio to calibrate the speedometer. It doesn't really have any idea how fast you're going -- it's only reading driveshaft revolutions. So ... put on larger tires, and the vehicle travels farther for each revolution. That means you're going faster than the speedometer thinks you're going. The difference between 225/75-15s and 235/75-15s isn't much. It's about 1 percent. Call it 2 percent to be safe, and that translates to traveling 2 MPH faster than you think at 100 MPH, and 1 MPH faster at 50 MPH. now i'm confused, i know that larger tires "adds" a little bit more of speed by 1MPH or so but how can i figure this whole speedo thing out, i don't know my gears, all i know bout my MJ is it's an 86, it has a 2.8 v6 out of a 93 GMC sonoma (only cause the old motor had a crack in the block), it has a 5 speed tranny, it's 2wd and i have a 7'8" bed (i messured it :D), and i'm rollin on 225/75/R15s and apparently i speed 5MPH when my speedo reads 25 i do 30, Redwolf
  21. ok so how could i decode the vin number cause my title just says 1986 jeep comanche pick-up, probably between the previous owner and DMV there is a BIG idiot :laughin: Redwolf
  22. one tooth diff or not, still like to know if there's a way to calabrate my speedo, i'm currently rollin with 225/75/R15s and everyone i know says i do 5 over, Redwolf
  23. so i've seen pioneer MJs, i've heard of custom, X, and XLS, chief, even heard of the eliminator, what's the different "sub-classes" of comanches and what are the differerences? i'd really like to know, maybe it'll help me probably ID my MJ, Redwolf
  24. The accessory guide actually calls them "Sport Bars" not Roll Bars. interested in the accessories guide, is there a link i could check it out at? Redwolf
  25. wow, is there a way to currect it without takin it to a shop for one of those idiots to mess anything up cause acorddin to my parents and my friends i do 5 over the posted speed limit so i'm actually doin 10 over cause i generally speed 5 over anyhow  but i'd love to do it myself just like everything else i've done, the only thing i'm not gonna do myself to my MJ is the body work, i'm gonna get the inside and outside restored one day, Redwolf
