r&p identification on an 8.8
mjeff87 replied to mjeff87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'll let you know Patrick. I've already got my '44 for my MJ, so I'm just interested in getting it for anyone else who might need it, only 'cause their prices are so good (I'll add a tiny markup for my effort, tho :-D ) The only thing they'll charge extra for would be the calipers and rotors (like $10 and $7 each, respectively), and maybe also the e-brake cables (IIRC $7-8 each). All the mounting crap and pinion flange is included in the axle price. I'm actually swapping my XJ '44 with a guy who has an MJ '44 but needs an XJ one....a match made in heaven. That way I can stay SUA and get it under the MJ easier (for now) Jeff -
That's an understatement :D Good gawd, that's an awful lot of info there, and all excellent. You could also include a part on converting a 2WD to 4WD....that seems to come up quite a bit, too. I'd gladly lend some help compiling that section. Jeff

r&p identification on an 8.8
mjeff87 replied to mjeff87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Pete, we need a "slapping forehead" smiley...... I swear sometimes I can't see the forest for the trees  Anyways, it's a '97 (with discs). If it's still down there on Saturday I think I'm going to get it. Maybe I'll get lucky and they'll only charge me for a "2WD" rear axle, $40 :D They gave me (as in didn't ring up) an almost brand new MJ cargo mat with full padding last weekend, but I bought a bunch of other stuff too. Jeff -
Quick, can anyone tell me how to determine a ratio on an 8.8, short of popping the cover? A 97 exploder just showed up in the 'yard, and I'm trying to find out what's in it. There's only 1 tag on a cover bolt with a whole gaggle of numbers, none of which I could translate into a ratio :( If it's 4.10, I'm gonna snag it for resale (if anyone wants it let me know) Thanks, Jeff

**update** It's looking like we're going to try for this Sunday afternoon...still haven't worked out a meeting place, tho. Jeff

I think Rob L. (automan) has a chrome longbed rollbar he's selling. Check for a post from him a week or so ago over on the Yahoo board....he's got a bunch of stuff he's getting rid of. Jeff

Credit goes to Jim Blair (carnuck) for this one. I'm partial to #'s 10 and 11 :-D 24 REASONS YOU MAY BE A JEEPER 1. A new dent in the sheet metal actually fixed another dent, or it just added some character. 2. You know at least 3 800 numbers to aftermarket off-road business by heart. 3. You are on a first name basis with the guys at every local auto parts store in town. 4. You want to take things apart and rebuild them, even if they are not broken. 5. You have a monetary equivalent of a Mercedes Sedan invested into your Jeep, but it still looks like crap. 6. You consider starting a vehicle five times in any given minute routine. 7. You own a vehicle, which now weighs 1000 lbs. more than when it came off the showroom floor. 8. You look for jeeps in everything, and try to figure out the year and model. 9. You are the type of person who goes crazy if you sit in a highway traffic jam more than 5 minutes, yet you can spend six hours driving one and a half miles and consider it to be a form of relaxation. 10. You'll stop and look at any old rust heap thinking parts vehicle. 11. The weatherman says "Stay in, it's dangerous" and you think " time to go wheeling." 12. You are happy that you can't use 1st gear on the street. 13. A military convoy passes by and you only look at the axles, tires, and antennas. 14. You have enough straps, chains, rope, ets. in your Jeep to keep the Queen Mary docked during a hurricane. 15. You understand that JEEP is a way of life, not just for transportation. 16. You use a hose to clean the inside and the outside. 17. A low-rider Jeep pulls up next to you, and you get out and b*@$£ slap the driver. 18. You have a high water mark in the inside of your Jeep. 19. You use the ice scraper on the inside of the windshield. 20. The AAA guy breaks down, you stop and fix his problem and get back on the road. 21. You'll drive 2 days at 600 miles a day so you can spend 2 more days driving 3 miles per day. 22. You have more pictures of your Jeep than of your kids. 23. You spend more time deciding which $3.00 bushing to use than you do on personal hygiene. 24. You are sitting here reading this while your wife/husband is waiting for you in bed.

shortbed vs. longbed drive shaft lengths
mjeff87 replied to starfox's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
There are different driveshaft lengths for both short (113") and long (120") bed lenghts, as well as different lengths for 2WD and 4WD as well. All of the driveshafts, regardless of length, connect via a U-joint, to a slip yoke in the front which has the splines to mate with the tranny (2WD) or transfercase (4WD). There are no splines on the driveshaft itself. The rear axles all have a different pinion length, and take different driveshaft lengths accordingly. I'd be cautious buying a shaft sight unseen if it doesn't list the length, just because there are so many variables. What are the specs on your MJ? You can measure the length you need between the tranny (or TC if 4WD) and the rear pinion yoke so you know what you need. Jeff -
Just saw this on the classifieds on JU. Might help ya (?) http://65.42.106.152/forums/showthread.php?t=704218 (From the looks of that, I can tell mine's not OEM....) Jeff

We can plan something for the late spring/summer (like after I get my axle/gears and 31's in :D ) There seems to be more than a few on here from TN that could probably make it there too. Jeff

and for the record, me and Missi (my wife) are coming up on our 14th anniversary this year. She's hated my MJ from the day I got it, but she tolerates it 'cause it gets her azz around when the weather gets not so nice. I plan on being buried inside of it when I die, so it ain't going anywhere anytime soon  Jeff

I'm meeting a guy to swap some parts, and Raleigh/Durham is 1/2 way for both of us. It's not a "run", more like it's gonna be some folks kinda all in the area at the same time, so we're going to try to meet each other and just say "hi". of course, there may be some drinky-drinks involved........ :D Jeff

You've lost pressure to the rear circuit somewhere. My guess is the rear brakeline back along the framerail, up in the corner right before it bends toward the rear height valve. Seems like all MJ's blow the line out somewhere right around there. Follow the hard lines along the framerail underneath back and look for fresh fluid splattered out. It may not be there (could be a wheel cylinder), but if it's in the line, your best bet is to not do a patch job, but cut the line back to clean solid metal and splice in there. I had to go almost back to the front LCA area to find solid enough line to fix mine  If you just patch the bad section you may find, odds are it's gonna blow out somwhere else sooner than later. Jeff

Only the 2.5's that had an AW4 behind them, not the 904. I guess the OD in the AW4 made the tall gears functional. Jeff

Hey all younz from the southeast..... Me and some others over on NAXJA are kicking around the idea of a small meet-n-greet at or around the Raleigh/Durham area some weekend soon. Details are non existant at this point, but I'm guessing just whoever's around are just gonna meet up somewhere and have a few beers or whatnot (more not than what for me, since I have a 2 hour drive back home :( ) Anyone local (or not) to the area? If so, bring your MJ on over and say hi..the more the merrier. Details to follow as they develop. Jeff

That sucks. Mine has a 1" aluminum trim piece around the outside, and the gasket is buried under that. Maybe you could try gooping in some clear sealant to seal it (?) On a side note, I almost wish I didn't have mine, down here in VA. No A/C plus a black vinyl interior, and in the summer the sun just beats down on you from the roof. It's like a little EZ bake oven :D I don't have an inside covering for it, so I just jam some cardboard sheeting up and wedge it in above the visors.....I've even toyed with the idea of spraying the inside of the glass flat black (ghettofab at it's bestest). ^^^sounds scary^^^ Jeff
-
You wouldn't happen to have a pic of your sunroof would you? I've got one in mine but I don't know if it's OEM or aftermarket, and I've never seen another MJ with one to compare. I'm guessing it's aftermarket 'cuz the rest of the truck is all base model (rubber mat, AM radio, no power nothing) but I can't find any manufacturer markings on it anywhere. I need to get some replacement parts for the latching mechanism...it's sealed but it won't stay up because of the broken parts. BTW, spray silicone works great on that gasket just like the door gaskets. I hit mine about 3X a year, open the door (or sunroof) and spray on the silcone, let it soak in for a few minutes and "swell" the gasket, then shut it up. Jeff

X2 on attaching the line to the master BEFORE tightening the mounting nuts....it makes the job alot easier. Also, don't go cheap on the replacement part or you'll end up doing it all over again within a year. I replaced mine with an Autozone el cheapo, and it lasted all of 6 months and about 10K miles before it started leaking out the back  Others have reported similar results. Bite the bullet and get a good new master, not a reman. Jeff

That was me who was gonna get the P/N, but I never found one visible on the 'bell  I also saw one with my own eyes (it was in the rig that I pulled the 4.56 D30 from). I shoulda grabbed the TCU when I got the axle, too. I went back to get it a couple weeks later and they pulled the XJ and crushed it, AW4 and all...... Jeff
-
Anybody building something huge on here? If so, I ran across a D70 dually axle in the 'yard this weekend  . I didn't get the r&p ratio, but I can find it out if anyone is interested. It's sitting under what was a Ford box truck or van type chassis, and it's in real nice shape. According to their posted price list, it should cost $39.95 (less drums, or add $10 ea for them), plus tax. Jeff

Kudos to you and all associated with that event, man! One of my best friend's sister just got diagnosed with MS right before Christmas.....she's 40 years old. Needless to say, everyone's a bit stunned :( Jeff
-
Cast heads are $20 + core at my local U-pull (aluminum ones are $40, and I'm dropping the one I got for the MJ off today at the shop to get decked/cleaned). If'n you're not in too much of a hurry for one, I can get you one down here (?) Jeff
-
 You're in for a surprise.... don't worry, you won't feel a thing. The urge to dump copious amounts of $$$ on the MJ will overcome you....you'll be powerless to stop or control it in any way. Nice, clean looking truck you got there! Jeff

Suprise under the carpet!!
mjeff87 replied to The Eliminator's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Same thing on mine too, Fred Flintstone-mobile :D Plus, the rust had started eating out the tranny tunnel under the seat where it met the floor. I cut some pieces of good floor out of a junkyard MJ, and added a sheet of 22 ga steel from Lowe's and instead of riveting, I used 1/8" sheet metal screws ('bout a zillion of them). I used commercial flashing sealant to "glue" the pieces in, then zipped them in with the screws. I blasted the underside with 2 cans of undercoating, and used spray on bedliner inside to do the entire floor. Not something I ever want to do again, fer sure! Jeff
