  1. Hoping women can handle it doesn't hack it on a sub. When you earn your dolphins, it means you can respond to any situation at any time anywhere on the boat. Danbyrambler hit it on the head stating females would be a distraction. Distractions cause mistakes. The safety record for submarines is pretty damn good mainly because every crew member knows exactly what to do in any given situation. I'm not saying females are unable to do this, but I'd prefer not to take that chance. The submarine service is purely voluntary. You can transfer out whenever you want to. And from what I'm reading, a lot of them are doing just that lately.
  2. Who said anything about what women can or can't do? They can probably perform their jobs better. Sooner or later when you're cooped up for 3+ months underwater like the boomer boats do, with zero privacy, sharing the same head, some asshat young sailor will try something. It happens all the time on surface craft and it'll just be escalated on a boomer. It's a bad idea.
  3. Thanks all for the posts. I found out on the Amazon Kindle forum that the newer readers in the last couple of years or so have a menu option to "opt out" of the special offer displays; costs $20 though. Before that you had to return them to Amazon for an exchange.
  4. That too. :fs1: I'm all for women's equality in both the military and civilian life, but not on the boats. Keep them on the tenders and other surface craft; morale is tough enough to maintain as it is. But with today's military and the way the mission has changed, it was only a matter of time before this happened. AFAIK, subs were the last to allow women to serve on them. Admiral Rickover must be rolling over in his grave..........
  5. Good Lord, I thought this would never happen. The Navy's last bastion has been breached. So glad I'm retired............ http://www.military.com/daily-news/2012/12/06/navy-pins-1st-nuclear-qualified-female-submariners.html?ESRC=navy.nl
  6. My credit card rewards store only offers two readers; the Kindle PaperWhite and last year's B&N NOOK w/o WiFi. So I'm kind of limited as per selection. :dunno: Tailgate: Give Jason a call at Complete Auto Recyclers. He's an MJ guy. There were 5-6 MJs in the yard last time I was up there. http://www.completeautorecyclers.com/
  7. Thanks Jake - great review. I'm leaning toward the Kindle Paper-White with Wi-Fi; great reviews on it. I discovered one of my credit cards had some extra reward $$ I didn't even know about, so I'll be ordering it through their rewards store. I'm not sure if I will receive the ad-less version or not, probably not. Do you know if you can purchase an ad-killer software download from Amazon if I get the ad feature?
  8. That's always a good point.
  9. I read a lot and am thinking about getting an e-book reader. I'm looking at the Kindle Paperwhite 6" Wi-Fi or the similar Barnes and Noble 6" Wi-Fi. I don't want to browse the internet with it, check email, or have a bunch of advertising. Just want a simple clear reader for mostly night reading. Does anyone have any experience with these and have any recommendations?
  10. Pete! Gasp! Nice.
  11. The 205's are long gone. Went to 235's, then 30", now 31". Happy now. Big enough for me.
  12. It is. When I mounted a Benz ambient temp display in my 91 clock I had to Dremel quite a bit on the case - turned out the vibes killed the LED display. I had a spare, replaced the board/display, and it functioned again. http://comancheclub.com/topic/5323-mercedes-ambient-temperature-display-in-an-mj/page__hl__ambient For the A/F meter, I mounted it in an Autometer A-pillar gauge pod.
  13. Me, that's who. That's what was on my rig when I bought it.
  14. Regarding your chime module. Use the below to determine if you are getting the 12V signal on module pin 8 when you leave the headlights on and remove the ignition key: [tab] [4] [3] [2] [1] [8] [7] [6] [5] The tab is the lock tab that holds the buzzer in. Pin 5 is a blank. Pin 1 is power Pin 2 goes to the instrument cluster Pin 3 is ground Pin 4 is the seat belt input Pin 5 blank Pin 6 is the door switch input Pin 7 is the key in input Pin 8 is the headlight input
  15. :agree: With 27" tires, 3.55 gears, and cruising in AW4 O/D (.75) @ 70MPH, the engine turns @ 2319 RPM. With 31" tires, 4.10 gears, and cruising in AW4 O/D (.75) @ 70MPH, the engine turns @ 2333 RPM. Nearly the same.
  16. Ouch!
