Went looking for the build sheet, but I was mistaken. I have the dealer's invoice, which is different and doesn't have the gas tank on there.
-
I've never run out because I pay veeeeeery close attention to the tiny gas gauge. Trust me, the 13.5 gallon tank existed; you've seen that already from 3 posters on this thread. Somewhere I've got the build sheet. I'll look for it after work today.
-
Then mine must be special, since it only takes a little over 13 gallons.

87 shortbed MJ has the tiny stock gas tank. I'd like to get a bigger tank and since I figure finding one in an MJ is gonna be a task, can anyone give me some places to look for a new replacement? I was thinking JC Whitney (or the equivalent) might have something? Ideas?

Well, there was this extra roll of brown wire w/orange stripes laying around. Seemed like a waste not to use it . . . .
-
Any reasonably competent upholstery shop will do. I had my buckets recovered and they are a perfect color match.
-
Then it probably is a moot point, since my fuel pump is from a Mustang.
-
How important is the ballast resistor? My 87 doesn't have one since the rebuild two years ago and runs fine.
-
I want a hat, but just in one color - khaki.
-
Any pics and/or measurements rworks? Thanks  No pics. Used the instructions from the link already posted in this thread. Wasn't hard at all.

I did what he did, but I used two supports. Works fine. No more rod to screw with.

OK, I'm Stupid about 4WD in MJs
rworks replied to rworks's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yes, both fronts go the same direction. I did some further looking last night and the front has no vacuum disconnect (nor any boxes or attachments outside the gear housing). So I guess I have a "newer" Dana 30 front end w/o vacuum disconnect. -

IIRC, the MJ came with a choice of Selec-Trac or Command-Trac 4WD, which was the NP231 or NP242. Am I mistaken? http://jp.automotive.com/75422/154-0610 ... index.html And yes, my MJ isn't stock. AW4 came from a '94 XJ, front and rear axles from a '91 XJ, and the engine from a '01 Grand Cherokee. -
Went to the shop today to put her up on a lift so I could check for a rattle noise (transmission mount looks to be the culprit) and noticed something that I never picked up on before. Turning the rear driveshaft by hand only the left wheel moves forward. Turn the shaft the other way and only the right wheel moves backwards. Both wheels never turned together. So in 2WD the truck is really only 1WD?????? :huh???: BTW, the rear end is a stock Dana 35. OK, so I go to the front driveshaft and turn it. Both front wheels turn together. NP242J transfer case. Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't a stock 242 let the front shaft turn freely without the wheels turning too? Unless the CAD "mod" has been done, but I haven't done that. I must be having a stupid day or something. This is my 2nd 4WD truck and I just never noticed these things. :dunce:

Thanks for the replies. Maybe I was a little unclear in my original post. The truck isn't wobbling, tracks straight and acts pretty well on the road. Except that when I bounce test it, I get two rebounds. And if I grab the side of the bed and shake it, the side-to-side motion also doesn't dampen out correctly. Yes, there are a few noises when I drive (especially on bumps) but thats not what I was asking about. I figure its shocks and probably bushings. I thought I would ask if there were any suggestions for making it smoother. I thought maybe someone would suggest a favored brand of shock, or maybe a place to get bushings for the swaybar/leaf springs/body. ?
-
OK, more issues to fix. Little did I know when I bought my MJ that literally a month wouldn't go by without something to fix. So this month it may be shocks or bushings or something suspension. Basically, the truck is driving waaaaay too bouncy, and the side-to-side motion is more than I recall being normal. THere is also a fair amount of rattle/noise over bumps, so I figure I'll look at the springs and assorted things at the same time. Any suggestions for general ride improvement in a stock MJ?

Idiot light to full gauge swap question (searched)
rworks replied to phenryiv1's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Make a little AT shift indicator out of cardboard. Or: http://www.jegs.com/p/Ididit/755116/10002/-1 -
I switched my gauge cluster with one from an 87 XJ. Everything hooks up and works, but the missing shift indicator was kinda annoying. So I got a 3x5 index card and made a little arrow and a PRND321 card. Or you could try this: http://www.jegs.com/p/Ididit/755116/10002/-1

No X model that I've ever heard of. Could be the owner is clueless.
-
6k miles ago. Everything was normal until mid-Nov.
-
Goes into and out of 4/OD with a bang/bump that is about 10 times harder than normal. I'm told that the TPS is the first place to start. Since I've replaced it and (apparently) calibrated it properly, whats next?
-
OK, 87 MJ with 4.0L and AW4 tranny. About a month ago started shifting hard into and out of 4/OD. So I replaced the TPS (system voltage is 4.65v and set TPS at 3.85v) and its still doing it. What else should I be looking at since up until a month ago it was fine?
-
Not an expert, but I would definitely clean the IAC and throttle body. Gets pretty gunky in there and when I had the almost-stalling problem a good cleaning did the trick. YMMV.
-
Check your grounds and clean or replace them if you can. Even after doing that to my '87 I still only get 4.85V. Its a 20 yer old truck, and even new I doubt everyone got exactly 5V. As for the ratio, just get as close to the .830 as you can. Won't be perfect but it should work.
