Pugeot Question/ General Tranny Questions
TheJeepNut replied to Oddmodman's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
And there you have it. As so often is the case, Your Mileage May Vary... My opinions stand and are backed up by literally thousands of posts on dozens of sites condemning the Peugot transmission. And my personal experiences with it were indeed not hallucinated. However, others seem to find that theirs works just fine. It's common when you ask if A is better than B. If I lived in Alaska, I'd look for better odds for reliability and switch to the AX15. It's too easy to do, to not do it.- 21 replies

Hi all. Jeez.. I still subscribe to the mailing list. LOL... this is the 2nd iteration of a web presence for the group and I didn't really get too familiar with the old one.... so I gotta ask... Is there a place now where we can post files? Also I tried to drag n' drop an image into a post but kept getting errors about "you must first enter a post." All I did was delete the images and it posted the message. Any ideas what that's all about? Thanks!

Pugeot Question/ General Tranny Questions
TheJeepNut replied to Oddmodman's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I cannot speak to details about the failure. But I can confirm (as an owner thereof) that the Peugot transmission is crapola. It will take only light duty street use. If you plan on wheeling your MJ it will fail. If you drive it like you stole it, it will fail. If you haul a lot with it, it will fail. They are hella expensive to fix and I'm told somewhat trickier than the average to get right. The first rebuild on mine cost $1700. There was not a 2nd rebuild. When it failed the 2nd time after 18 months, the truck parked. Aisan-Warner is the AX15 mfgr and they make some very robust and reliable transmissions. But as with many things, it's about the application. They also make the AX5 but you won't want that in an MJ w/ the 4 liter. It was commonly used in AMC's and 4cyl. Jeeps. I DO have a Service Manual for the BA10. I can either send that by email or there should be somewhere on the forum to post publications and such... I'll put it up there once I figure out where it goes.- 21 replies

As noted in my AMC20 post, the Street Comanche requires a new Engine / Driveaxle interface. The French have been officially dismissed. However as this is a 2WD application AND as it's getting a 260+HP stroker, is more a horsepower rather than torque consideration...I'm a little daunted by all my options. Of course the venerable AX15 is the most straightforward swap from a BA10. But I'm thinkin' it ain't gonna like being speed shifted. :brows: Then the NV3550. Better, worse, or about the same? Then there are who KNOWS how many variants of the T5 for Mustangs, World Class, TKO, . etc. Then Tremec. I remember reading good things about Tremec transmissions a long time ago. Wasn't Tremec the OEM for T5s or something like that? But when you get into the T5/Tremec world, I begin to wonder what complications I'd run into regarding various things... like: The shifter position, is it going to line up with my console opening? Would it sit under the truck without having to pound the hell of of something to make it fit? Bellhousing? What about clutch interface? I don't care too much about spline counts. Getting a drive shaft modded will be the least of my issues. Anybody with relative input, please chime in. I've got lots of homework to do... Thanks!

oh don't get excited, I don't have one...... but I'm wondering about an SJ AMC20. Anyone know the WMS spec on one of those?... I did some browsing but couldn't seem to find any info on that. Should be somewhat easy to find and I can get new perches welded easy enough... #24's gettin' a Golen stroker. I know it's not an optimal build for a street application, but I need to minimize complications and keeping with the 4.0 seems the right thing for me to do with it. So now I'm looking for something to put in #24 that'll stand up to my abuse. I know that AMC'ers are runnin' AMC20s at tracks far and wide... the 71-74's are the right width... or close enough for gov't work, so that's what I'm thinking at the moment. But there are CERTAIN people on this list HOARDING Javelin axles... according to threads I was reading prior to post... Just kiddin' guy, I'd sit on them too... but if anyone knows someone willing to sell one, keep me in mind. And I'm not even trying to find the golden MJ AMC20. 4.10 gears would make a great 0-60 time but it'll KILL me as a DD with that stroker burning premium on top of it. I can't afford the luxury of a custom axle and I've got a tranny issue to resolve as well. And the truck has been sitting idle since 1998. Kinda sad, but it's been sitting now for several more years than it was ever driven. So the brakes will need done, interior is shot, headliner, sunroof, tires, audio, LineX the bed... I NEED to keep this project under $8k or very close and 60% of that will be motor. Not sure it's doable but I think I can get a drive train in it for that anyway. But I KNOW that 260hp stoker is gonna eat a D35 alive in a hurry. I know my foot. That D35 hasn't got a chance. I was gonna join up on the AMC Forum looking for feedback on strength issues relative to higher horsepower as opposed to torque or the dynamics of rocks n' trails. But I'm sure many of you are also "cross posters" with both a "wheelie rig" and a "wheelin' rig" so thought I would run it by the group. What about D44s w/ welded spider? Seem to be a lot of those around for XJ/MJ's. Too much tire chewing for street use? Remember... I only have ONE axle to deal with.... I'll have to do some kind of posi on whatever goes in there.... I think 3.55ish gears. I want it to run like a scalded dog, but I've got to be able to afford to fuel it... The one other option I've given consideration to is the Ford 9" ... something newer w/ disc brakes perhaps... any one have an idea what trucks/cars carried approx. 60.5" worth of Ford 9" rear under them? Please share opinions re: options for a strong rear end on the Street Comanche geared toward street performance. (Legal Disclaimer: I have not ever performed, partcipated in, or actually observed a dog scalding, but I'll just assume it would run like hell.)

I dunno. I've done both and I think I like it better haulin' around my relations in the MJ than in the XJ. Fewer of them fit in the cab where I have to listen to them... God Bless my bucket seats. :brows:

I just wanted to drop a note to the list that I've moved the Street Comanche site. New one is here: http://streetcomanch...m/Overview.html Been trying desperately to get things organized so that I can pull #24 out of the barn (literally) and tow it to the garage to start resurrection. I'll be posting more as I begin the rebuild... Sorry to see Mark having to move #59 along to a new owner. Hope a real MJ lover gets this one. It's really close to real nice....just a little TLC and she's a beaut!

Nice!... I have to admit to having gone to school with and actually being friends with a guy that ended up masterminding (oxymoron) a plot that involved several people, a botched commercial theft, and murder. My buddy borrowed his Suzy250 and we took it and my Husky (the BEAST! '74 450WR) out 3 states away to ride in the mountains of West Virginia over a long weekend once back in the day.... Knew him that well. Don't see him much anymore around town.... :shake:

Sounds like ground to me too. Try eliminating things one at a time. I think I'd pull turn signal bulbs on that side one at a time. Or disconnect the tail light connector completely. Are your instrument panel lights turned all the way up? Does varying them vary the flashing of the clock. How juiced up is the battery?... just some random thoughts...

I never was much on chiropractors until I finally just hurt so bad I went to one out of desperation more or less. (read my wife's nagging at my constant complaining) I was lucky and found a really great one. Resolved severe pain I'd been having for years off and on. It ain't all about the back. You can DEFINITELY hurt somewhere else and a couple of trips to the chiropractor could resolve it. YMMV. ;)

Get ahold of this guy. He can carve one up for you out of wood. This is the most amazing video and modeling I've ever seen. The model is superb but the video production is outstanding! (wish it was an MJ)...

Oh Jeez... I've been 19 nearly 3times... LOL 2.84211 to be exact... Happy Birthday! (you'll be bored of hearing that in another 19 years..... :brows: )

Not to argue but Archer Racing is in Duluth, MN. I had the opportunity to speak to John Archer ( ..or was it Bobby?... can't remember now...) 15 years ago or so and I actually purchased the last couple of loose pieces of ground effects that he had in the shop. Or maybe he just gave them to me. Can't recall. I'll find the records tho... I'm a packrat. He only had left exactly what I needed. The one piece on the right rear and a cover for the back bumper (mine got slightly damaged in a rear end bump by some goober). I seem to recall him relating that they had the ground effects produced. They used the ground effects on the trucks they raced in SCCA circuit back in the late 80s. But they didn't build the Street Comanche. I was told that the Jeep dealer ordered a package and then built the truck from there. I've got Archer brochures and parts lists with the prices and part numbers of the parts. But that does no good these days since no one is making them anymore. Wonder where the molds went... ? hmmm.... I'll scan and post all the brochure pages, etc on the site eventually as well just for all the Jeep nuts out there. Again, not arguing, just trying to keep it real, what is known vs. what is surmised. And my memory isn't pristine. I'm not a young buck anymore. LOL I'll post my version of the truth on my Google site eventually. Maybe James is still around (#54) and will help keep me honest. He used to haunt a few lists and I think he actually talked to one of the Archer brothers 10-15 years ago as well. I'm digging through 20+ years of emails and notes trying to pull it all together for the site. Pretty sure I've got a VERY old James email that documented a bunch of stuff. I have posted a request to the Archer brothers site to see if I can get one of them to dialog with me one more time so I can document all he knows on the website. I remember getting the impression years ago that they would like to move on from the Jeep thing. They are a racing team, not necessarily Jeep enthusiasts. I don't want to badger them but would love to get it from the guys who really knew what might be FACT. Pete M if you're browsing the thread and know anything specific, please chime in. I seem to recall you picked up some tidbits of info over the years... Oh and if anyone knows how to get Chip Foose to OVERHAUL #24 for me I'd be ever so grateful.

Yup. Would suspect that someone would like to try and build one one of their own and use the plaque. No VIN clues as they were all just a base pkg that the dealer(s) horsed up. And I believe they were not all exactly the same. But some details are apparently universal to them. The ground effects kit is the hard thing to get. Once Chrysler stuck their nose into it and killed off the Comanche it spelled DOOM for us in the aftermarket. Too short a run to be really supported. That's why you don't find aftermarket tailights anywhere for instance. Just not enough potential sales to interest a big company. I did always wonder tho, there were a TON of 2x XJ's out there. I would have thought money could have been made with ground effects kits. But everything else about them could be easily duplicated. Which is why they aren't all that valuable. I've been told that what made them special otherwise was that you could NOT order in 1987 a 2x 4.0l w/ 5speed and a short wheelbase. OTHER than this special order that the dealer(s) built into a Street Comanche. Only 4cyl with the shortbase in 2x versions. Have never been able to find out if that was one dealer or many but almost ALL of the ones I saw, I saw in California. Nowadays they've scattered about. One in OK, mine in IN now, #25 was in IL before OK.... etc....

I WISH. I'm one of those transplants that felt like he'd come home when I moved to California. Lived in San Diego, then Irvine, worked in Long Beach and finally ended up in Santa Cruz mtns working in Palo Alto before work paths led me astray. #24was found on the lot at Don-a-Vee in Bellflower in 1989 just after I'd returned from a WestPAC. My sales guy had to argue with another sales guy about who was gonna get the truck. Was on the lot <24hrs when I saw it. I saw it, drove home to Irvine, got the checkbook and went back and bought it that night, much to the chagrin of the other dude that was trying to get there to buy it! lol Some guy in San Gabriel had traded it. What an idiot. lol All the pics you'll see of #24 on the Yahoo groups photo page were taken up by Tahoe. I never was much of a camera guy so don't have that many of them. I used to tell anyone that asked that I was a Hoosier by birth, a Californian by heart, now living in Memphis. But now I'm back in Indiana, However Street Comanche #24 has NEVER been driven on salted roadways and to this day hasn't got a speck of rust on the body anywhere. It's sitting in a barn right now "waiting for my ship to come in" so I can resurrect her. After blowing up the 2nd BA5/10 pos it got parked. After raising 3 kids I'm still broke and waiting to restart that project. She's been sitting since 1998... I'm slow but I'll get there. Thinking it would be superb w/ a 4.6l stroker and an AX-15. I'll put all these boring details on the page eventually.

Hi all and HAPPY NEW YEAR. In an effort mainly to entertain myself but to help get out any/all info I can on these special trucks I've created a page for everything I've ever found out about them. The narrative will get bigger soon as I begin to fill in the details that I've learned. But for now, its mostly the Photos and Eulogies page with links to all that I know of out there still alive and not. https://sites.google.com/site/streetcomanche/ Hope it's found to be useful and informative. If anyone knows how I can make that hit the top of a Google search, let me know. JeepNut
