Should I be able to change into 4WD on the fly?
Jerry replied to Jerry's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
OK, thanks Geonovast. Although that doesn't quite answer my question ;) I have had the transfer case oil changed recently and it doesn't leak so the fluid should be good. My real Q is: should I stop completely to change the lever into 4WD or am I supposed to be able to change into 4WD while the vehicle is moving? Thanks  edit: the 4WD all works fine once engaged so all the mechanisms (CAD etc) are doing what they are meant to  -
Just wondering guys. My truck doesn't like it! Changing on the fly that is. I thought you were supposed to be able to change at up to 70mph in these trucks? It's been snowing alot round here and some roads are clear in places and covered in others so I've been trying to change in and out of 4WD at about 15mph. Some times it goes in with a bit of a "crunch" sound and other times it just won't budge unless I stop. Comes out fine though. Last night I tried again at low speed and it made a real worrying "bang!!" noise  Please can someone explain what the correct method for changing is, if there is one?! Thanks loads Disclaimer: It's my first ever jeep of any kind so that's why I'm a technical :dunce: And, it's my only car so throwing it in the garage to install a 4.0L with a better gearbox is not an option, I need it on the road

All you wanted to know about oil and oil filters

Useful info guys!! :wrench: -
There's a few suppliers out there like this one http://www.ptfeparts.com/?gclid=CPL41fKU4pcCFRNOagod7nd_Cw Maybe a company like that could sell you a chunk and you can shape it yourself? I Googled "teflon suppliers" and got quite a few hits  EDIT: For your info: Teflon's technical name is P.T.F.E or Poly Tetra Fluoro Ethylene Might help, who knows! :wrench:

Thanks for the info DC. Not good to hear about your seeing a fatal RTC. A serious reminder about the potential of getting it wrong on the road. I will indeed drive safe. Slow and steady is my motto (not much choice if you have a V6 ;) ) especially with a loved one in the passenger seat

From Langley up to Sun Peaks or Big White. I've been told I probably won't need any chains or cables but getting there means going up the Coquihalla for which I must carry something "just in case" apparently. I've now got some Cobra chains from good old Canadian Tire so should be alright  Any C'addicts out there used these before? Look good to me but I've no idea what's good or bad yet :dunce: http://www.sumproducts.com/item-detail.cfm/id/COBRA/storeid/1

Guess I can come out of the closet too now! ;)Another tinsely Christmas bike decorator over here  Apologies if the dirt offends some folk but winter riding is hard enough work without any cleaning after the daily commute.I promise under all that muck is a beautiful gleaming bike  That is one awsome playhouse!!

I knew someone would be watching my inept attempts to post a pic! :clapping: I'll go back and read the how to when I gets a chance. Happy holidays! edit: fixed, courtesy of photobucket

messed up this one .....no delete post button?

Thanks guys  I'm guessing we'll be encountering a mixture of surfaces so it sounds like cables would be best for that. Then there's the cost. Under 50 bucks a set works for me! If I get stuck I'll go get some some chains for next time

Hi guys, hoping for some sub zero driving advice please. We're heading North to play in the snow over Christmas and I need to get some chains or cables (the law). I've been told cables are much cheaper and I probably wouldn't need chains anyway. I have no experience using either. I have driven in snow once or twice though and loved it! What are the pro and cons of each? Thanks

I replaced the coolant. Not sure I did it right though! Book says it needs 12.5 quarts and I only managed to fit 4.5 quarts in! Guess I didn't manage to drain it down properly :fool: And I sealed up the leaky bed cap with some RV sealant. It's hideous stuff, I just spent the last half hour trying to get it off my hands

Plenty of opinions on this subject! The pipe coming from the manifold is in place. The airbox has yet another vacuum operated gate in it to direct air flow from either up front or around the manifold, maybe that is stuck and only feeding cold air. For reference I am a biker too and I know about the carb ice thing from the old 80's Kwakers

Thanks for the responses guys. I guess further investigation is required to make sure I've got the correct facts at my finger tips :typing: I'm new to Jeeps and I don't know any details about my engine yet. It was simply the first car to come along when I was looking to buy one after moving to :Canadaflag: ! In fact it found me not the other way round :wavey: No one else I've met seems to know the 2.8 V6 either! Is it a General Motors engine? The guy in my local shop thinks there is a flat heater element between the carb and the manifold. There is some wiring down there suggesting this may be the case but I'll have to get it apart to know for sure. One more question about the cooling system ..... what could be keeping it running so cold other than a broken thermostat? :dunno: It's had two new ones since I got it. One I replaced and the other the garage replaced as it was still running cold!

Thanks for the weber info Fubar. To describe - It runs great and idles fine in warmer weather but as soon as the temp drops (around 1degC this morning) it stalls at idle. Eventually after a while of driving (25mins or so) it gets warm enough and runs OK. My local mechanic suggested it was probably icing when I described the problem to him. The only time i've seen the temp gauge rise above the first mark after the blue is when pulling the camper up some hot valley roads. Do they all run that cold? I have replaced the thermostat BTW. I've now got a piece of board covering 3/4 of the radiator to try and get it to warm quicker but it hasn't made much difference :dunno: Is it possible to get a new carb heater?Cheers, Luke

I assume the carb heater is broke. Is it possible to repair? Probably not! I'm guessing it's just another thing I'll have to put up with because I won't be able to get a replacement part :( Thanks, Luke (Losing faith & getting pissed with never being able to get parts for his Comanche :headpop: ) 2.8 V6 BTW

Maybe look at getting a prefabricated one from companies making fuel tanks for other stuff? Here's a company making tanks for boats: http://www.coastline-tanks.com/bellytanks.html I'm not sure about cost though, might be pricey!

Leaf springs, weight carrying vs flex questions
Jerry replied to jeeperken87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I run air springs and give them a  http://www.airliftcompany.com/ride_control.html these ones compensate for loads up to 2000lbs -
Coming from the UK the comments about Land Rover made me LOL  So true! Expensive, slow and unreliable  But here's a statistic for you: Of all the 'series' type L/R's (old style originals made since the 50's) ever made, it's reckoned 75% are still on the road because you can just keep field repairing and welding them for ever and parts are still available. I can't even get a simple 'idle speed kick actuator' for my Comanche! Quote from Wikipedia, note the comments about jeeps ;) I prefer my Comanche though!

I have one (dwg or 3ds) Jackel. Probably the original of the render above, it's an exploded view though so you'd have to play with it to get the dims you're after. I'll see if I can find a link to the website where I got it. It is a freebie BTW. Or if you PM me your email I'll send the file to you  Yes I am a drafter! :papers: That would take you a lifetime or two! :typing: Go for it, I'll buy a copy ;)

Spend the money on bling instead, it looks great as it is

Oooooookay (said in a slightly concerned & bemused tone). So 'Oh' founts of MJ knowledge    Where might I go from here? Are there any sources of discontinued parts? Is my only choice a used part? Could I get a unit that is similar and make it fit? Thanks guys  -

hmmmm? I'm still drawing blanks at Lordco so I've removed it for a pic. Is this definitely a throttle solenoid? It's appears to be vacuum driven.
