XJ shocks can work up front, but not in the rear.

I would suggest that you buy a set of bayonet elimantors for the front. This maked the front a hoop to hoop setup, which greatly increases your shock choices. They only cost about 30 bucks.

Why can't XJ shocks work in the rear? :huh???:

I just put a set of 3" XJ shock front and rear of my comanche. Works just fine. They were a perfect fit for my 3" AALs. XJs have bar pins in the top mounting, just don't put the bar pin in the shock.

I suggest making new upper and lower mounts so you can run a longer shock. Here's a couple of Ideas.

There's a ton of shocks that will work on the MJ rear. I have a cross reference list in MSWord, but I can't post it, or can I?

XJ rear shocks are different than MJ shocks. Even with the bar pins removed they won't fit. I'd like to see pics of how you made them work....

Here's the cross reference. I have had this list for ages, and do not remember who sent it; I think it was Gojeep (Marcus). When I first got my MJ I used it and picked up a set of new NOS Toyota Land Cruiser shocks on Ebay for cheap, and they worked perfectly, although a bit stiff. All the shocks on this page are supposed to have similar characteristics, i.e. mounting type and travel, for unlifted MJs.

I ordered mine from Amazon.Com actually... Stock Height... Can probably get better prices, but I like the free shipping on Amazon and no Tax.

Monroe 37026 (Front) - $47/ea now (were $35 when I got em)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000C53QTA

Monroe 37029 (Rear) - $40/ea

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000C53QSG

Ouch - too high IMHO. I like Amazon too, but their free shipping is usually built into the selling price. I went down my list looking for NOS shocks on Ebay one by one, and found the Toy Land Cruiser rear set for $21 shipped. Didn't want to spend a lot of $ since I knew I would be lifting soon. Two years later I finally did.........then got OME shocks.

MEh i might go through rustys offroad 30 bucks each :(
Just remember that you get what you pay for when you are looking for new ones again in a year or so. ;)

I have used nothing but ProComp ES9000 shocks for about 5 years now. They are not expensive at around $40 each, but are far better quality than most in that range.

Stock XJ rear shocks are too short for an MJ. I tried to cheap out and put a set from an XJ into an MJ. With the truck sitting on the axles on jack stands (IOW at stock ride height), the shocks when fulley expended were 1/2" to 3/4" too short to span between the upper and lower mounting studs.
