mjeff87
Caught a bit of this on a public access channel last night while flipping thru the channels. It's a new concept in rotary engines that employs diesel engine theory. It's called the Rand Cam, and it has no plugs, and it produces 1 hp per .75 lbs of engine weight (compared to conventional piston engines that are about 1 hp per 5 to 6 lbs of engine weight). The thing only has two moving part assemblies! A 6" by 6" prototype version, weighing only 40 lbs, produced 42 hp It's basically the equivalent of a 24 cylinder diesel, 20:1 compression  Anyways, if it piques anyone's interest, here is the website: http://www.regtech.com/directcharge.html Also click the "Rand Cam Technology" link on the page and go to "prototype engine" to see the actual thing. Enjoy! Jeff

87manche
that's crazy cool, I just wonder about the materials used to seal the sliding bits to the cam. If it can be made durable enough then it will be revolutionary, but until one of thsoe can go 249K miles like my I6 then it's not gonna make it. pingpong
Just look at the Mazda rotary engines, I know they are different then what you posted, but all the same
DirtyComanche
And if you drive them hard, they last maybe 50K. No thanks.
feerocknok
A big problem with the Wankel (Mazda's rotary) is the apex seals go out on em. People always think their motor's wasted and it makes a worse name for the engine. As far as performance is concerned, Wankels are phenominal. As far as reliability is concerned, they suck... they suck things that shouldn't be sucked. Also, they make poor low-end torque due to their "3-stroke" design. However, this is not a Wankel...
