new to manual trannys question

what would happen if i accidently pulled the stick uot of R into N before the clutch was all the way in?

 

cause i THINK i did that the other day and i got a horrible SLAM but no revv changes and no smell and nothing else but previously that day the clutch had been acting REALLY weird. so that might not be it... BA10 hit the fan? i hope not.

Most likely you would be in neutral.

 

If you did this while under a lot of load (while accelerating or decelerating) you could strip a synchro or something like that, but more than likely you'd break the shift handle before you could yank it out of gear.

 

By feathering the throttle it's very easy to dump it into neutral without using the clutch, and it doesn't hurt anything. It is even possible to shift up or down without using the clutch, as long as the vehicle is moving. When the hydraulic line on my XJ blew out on the MA Tpke a couple of years ago, I drove from Worcester, MA, home to the New Haven, CT, area without a clutch. It isn't fun and I don't recommend it as a regular practice, but it can be done.

I'll toss my ring into the drove for a day without a clutch.

wakeman to ashland, on freakin country roads.

Turning off the truck to stop at a stopsign sucks, and I'm sure my starter didn't appreciate it.

Generally, I don't use the clutch when shifting out of gear during normal driving (and sometimes not shifting into gear either). When you get to the shift point, like Eagle says, feather off the throttle a bit and ease it out of gear....but don't try it under load. Then you're basically using the shift fork to pry the gears apart, and you get that "clunk" sound that you experienced. Same procedure almost for when you're coasting to a stop on decel....a quick blip of the throttle while you shift to N.....like buttah ;)

 

I like to think to myself as extending the life of the dreaded internal throwout bearing by not using it as much :D

 

Also, don't be like so many people out there who sit for extended periods with the clutch in while in gear, like at a stoplight. Put the darn thing in neutral. My brother drives his stick like that, and it kills me to ride with him sometimes!

Excellent point. The release bearing is not under load when your foot isn't on the clutch pedal. Sitting at a light with the tranny in gear with your foot on the clutch pedal means you are sitting at the light with the release bearing under load, spinning around and gradually wearing itself out.
