MJ doing strange things

Recommended Posts

A couple of weeks ago i got home and it was dark enough that i had the headlights on. I shut the switch off and the dash/tail lights were off but the head lights stayed on. I turned the ign. switch back on they went out. Last night i stopped to get gas and left the wiper switch in the on with the key off the wipers kept working same thing with the heater blower motor if you don't turn it off on the heater control it will stay going. Is there something wired direct on the fuse box or what?

My 88 XJ had a feature built in, where if you shut the ignition switch off before turning the headlight switch off, the headlights would stay on for a few minutes. It's so you can get to your door or something when it's dark. Maybe it's something like that?

If yours is a manual tranny, make sure fluid is not leaking out of the clutch master cyclinder down on the fuse panel. That will cause all kinds of strange problems as things start shorting together.

Geonovast is correct on the headlights. I think the name for the option was "Headlight Sentinal" or "Headlight Sentry." If you turn off the ignition before you turn off the headlights, they stay on for one minute (3 minutes?) to allow you to see your way to the door. If you turn off the headlights first and then turn off the ignition, they work normally.

Unlike some newer vehicles, you do have to push in the headlight switch after turning off the ignition. If you leave the switch in the ON position, the headlights will not "time out" -- they'll stay on and drain the battery.

The blower does not have a similar feature. If the blower is running after you turn off the ignition, there's a wiring problem somewhere.

I will try the headlight deal to see if they shut off! And it has an auto trans.

This thing has been road rough and hung up wet! It wasn't rokhoud it was the putz before him. I am just trying to get everything straight on it. I would really like to find one in a little better shape and wheel the he@l out of this one.
