TheNerfsmith Posted yesterday at 02:04 PM Posted yesterday at 02:04 PM Hi guys, its been awhile since I've ordered my brakes and the shop is just getting around to putting them on, Here's what I had ordered Powerstop KC2119 Front Powerstop KOE15327DK They've gotten around to installing them and their tech has said that the parts are wrong, and also that the newer 97 dual diaphram booster I ordered does not fit. Any help would be appreciated since I've been scratching my head at this all morning.
Eagle_SX4 Posted yesterday at 02:17 PM Posted yesterday at 02:17 PM The booster rod is the problem on the 97 booster. The booster you want is from a 95-96 XJ. I used a 97 booster but had to cut and weld the rod shorter. Also the brake line ends need to be changed to metric bubble flare fittings for the master cylinder. That front brake kit is for 1990 and up. The rear brake kit is for 1992 and up. Are the axles in your truck original or have they been swapped to a newer set?
89 MJ Posted yesterday at 02:21 PM Posted yesterday at 02:21 PM The knuckles, bearings, and brakes changed on the front axles in 90. I believe you can get a big brake kit for the earlier axles though, which is nice. I did not know that about the rear brakes.
TheNerfsmith Posted yesterday at 02:32 PM Author Posted yesterday at 02:32 PM The axles I have are original, a D30 I believe and a D44 in the rear.
Eagle_SX4 Posted yesterday at 03:05 PM Posted yesterday at 03:05 PM I would stop by the shop and take pictures of the front brake pads and order brake parts that match the parts that were taken off. The front pads look different pre and post 1990. The rear axle brakes are specific to the 44 and I had a difficult time tracking down the right drums and shoes. I finally found some at Advanced Auto. RockAuto may have some but they are not labeled as fitting the 44.
TheNerfsmith Posted yesterday at 03:36 PM Author Posted yesterday at 03:36 PM The kit had calipers too and that’s why I had ordered it just to update everything, I’m probably going to have to resell the parts and just get the ones that got booster included along with the master cylinder.
TheNerfsmith Posted yesterday at 03:37 PM Author Posted yesterday at 03:37 PM Just now, TheNerfsmith said: The kit had calipers too and that’s why I had ordered it just to update everything, I’m probably going to have to resell the parts and just get the ones that got booster included along with the master cylinder. Unless if there exists any creative ideas,
ghetdjc320 Posted yesterday at 04:11 PM Posted yesterday at 04:11 PM So the 90+ calipers are not an upgrade on the front D30 and are not compatible. The 89- knuckles used a bolt on caliper while the 90+ switched to a floating caliper with cast in pad “wings”. The 89- has man my upgrade options depending on the wheel size you have. You need at least 16’s to do anything special. The stock brake setup isn’t bad either, just don’t use hard pad compounds (like pure ceramic). Grab Centric posi-stop pads along with centric rotors and calipers for your model year axle. It’s plenty for a stock ish rig up to about 31’s. Don’t go with drilled or slotted rotors either as your just loosing a bit of pad contact area. Save those for street cars with oversized brakes. Keep the master cylinder stock bore size as well. Even the stock booster will work fine if the vacuum is sufficient at idle.
