Salvagedcircuit
I'd like to add fog lights to my MJ in the most painless way. Yeah, I'll probably have to do solder repairs and splice repairs, but that's a matter of course with something of this age. I've been sifting through ebay and I've noticed there are many variants of the fog light harness, in true AMC fashion. some have 1 relay and 8 pins populated. some have 2 relays and 10 pins populated. some have 2 pin weatherpack connectors for the fog lights, some have weird square blocks with holes. Does anyone know which one works plug-and-play in the MJ? I have a base MJ and I'd like to add a fog light switch, maybe a switch for the rollbar lights. Also, if anyone here has a spare fog light harness they would like to sell,
eaglescout526
Woot alright let’s begin! 84-86ish(probably 86) wont work. That uses a 7 terminal pack con connector. 87-90 uses that weird bell looking thing(probably ford) that has 10 terminals and it’s what you want. Maybe 91-96 might work but I’ve never messed with an HO to find out. So pic 3 is what you want. Pic 4 looks like headlamp connectors for the XJW spider eyes(late 86-90) As for the connectors to the lamps, there’s two styles to be mindful of. Weatherpack which is 88-90 and a ford style round connector for the Marchals found in 84-87. I’m not 100% on the ford connector for all the years but it’s what my XJ is rolling with. Now I added fogs the factory way. I got a harness from hella, got a somewhat worthless front lamp harness minus fogs and took one or two of the terminals from the donor harness and added them to my harness, spliced my fog lamp harness to those terminals and then I had a clean factory lookin install for my fog lamps. That’s the way I would do it if you can’t locate a front harness with the fog lamps. And if you do the aftermarket harness route, you could set yourself up for any lamp you want to use. Given you can find the era correct lamps.
Salvagedcircuit
is there anywhere to get the pins for the factory harness? I don't mind making one, I just assumed the pins for the 10 pin connector are unobtanium at the moment, so I'd just buy one that exists and modify it. This is the 10 pin fully populated harness. I was going to buy this one but I think it s for HO though because it has (2) relays https://www.ebay.com/itm/406152753401
eaglescout526
I have not been able to locate those pins so I just used pins and a little bit of wire from my donor harness and spliced them and my fog lamp harness together.
Eagle
I would make my own harness. If I remember correctly, there was something wonky about the factory setup -- either it didn't allow running the fogs without also running the headlights (which is the ONLY way to run fogs, if you're driving in fog), or they didn't turn off the fogs when you went to high beams -- and I believe that's a D.O.T. requirement. Much easier to make your own. Two relays, one switch, and some wire.
