hgeranium
I may not have a choice other than to take my chance with a chineseum sending unit with the bosch pump. If I'm installing a ter Option 1 Option 2 Option 3 Option 4 They all look equally sketchy so I may just get the cheapest one since I'm going to install that MTS unit at the turn of the new year anyways. I would just wait for them to come back in stock. For now just change your fuel pump. Then when the sending units are in stock swap your new pump over to the new sending unit. The fuel pump mounts to the side of the tank by the drive line. You don't have to pull the tank to get the fuel pump changed. It does make it easier but not necessary. It might be easier to pull the driveshaft, that would give you more than enough room to pull the sending unit. Also you need to pull the tank to get the bed off so taking the bed off is completely unnecessary.

Not sure where I heard the thing about taking the bed off, maybe I got taking the tank off to remove the bed switched. And that is GREAT that I don't need to drop the tank. I found an even better deal on the Bosch. $40. Come Thanksgiving I'll throw the Bosch pump in, new fuel filter, and hopefully fix the oil issue with the VCG and PCV grommet. Thank you so much! The Bosch pump is smaller than the original and needs the adapters to fit properly on the sending unit. This pic has every thing that should be included with the fuel pump. 9 minutes ago, hgeranium said: Might be a good idea to throw in a new strainer while I'm at it, huh? Yeah, the rule of thumb is new pump new strainer. The good thing about the 69302 is that it uses the stock strainer which is much bigger than most of the newer ones. Good idea to cancel and order that other one? I don’t see a couple of things in the pic compared to the first one. It was about a $30 difference. You can make that one work but you will have some fabrication to do to get it to sit on the hanger.

It’s pretty wild that those adapters are comparatively worth an extra $30. But for peace of mind it’s worth it.
amsuco
Another option is to get your old sending unit rebuilt. That's not quick or cheap either though. I've been on the waiting list with MTS since August for a new sending unit. The old one is getting rebuilt. The quote was just over $400. for that, with a wait of eight to ten weeks. When all is said and done, the sending unit is one part that I'm going to have a spare for.

The guy on the phone seemed pretty sure that it would be around January time that the new design would come out. I wonder how many CC members are on that waiting list lol
Pete M
I dropped a cheap ebay full assembly into the 88 I was working on and it's done great so far.

Cheap assembly with a good pump I'm assuming? Worst case scenario that's what I'll end up doing; at least temporarily.
Pete M
came with a pump of unknown quality. I bought a more expensive assembly first, but it didn't have any attachment point at the bottom of the pump and ended up coming apart in the tank. the cheap ones had a positive clamping for the pump and I rolled the dice. still works a few months later. Pete M
be careful of any that say they are for both an MJ and an XJ. the XJ one will technically work in an MJ tank, but the bend isn't 90* and it won't suck up the last few gallons of gas. guess what I found in the tank of that 88 that was causing me so much headaches and intermittent driveabilty. That sounds like a nightmare lol. How many miles per "tank" were you getting from that?
Pete M
no clue. she had recently purchased the truck and I'm not sure if she even went through half a tank. but lord knows that in my driveway (that has a slight grade) it was exactly at the point of pickup and caused me all sorts of headaches trying to find why it ran fine getting to the house, but suddenly kept stumbling for me. finally worked my way back to the pump and discovered nothing came out even though it had gas showing on the gauge. figured it was a bad pump but discovered the reality when I dropped the tank. the XJ crap was both not sucking up the last few gallons, but also showing the wrong level on the gauge due to the XJ float arm! ended up replacing the tank too due to corrosion inside.
