replacing clutch hydraulics

i'm about to change out the master and slave cylinder for the clutch on my '86 with a five speed. if anyone has any handy tips as i haven't done this before. i knew i needed to change them out, but the clutch worked almost smoothly as long as i kept the clutch fluid level up. and then, of course, one day i forgot to check the level and now i'm stuck pumping the clutch and slamming it into first and grinding it into reverse. :oops: i'm stupid.

Be sure to replace the line/hose that connects them. Otherwise one fine day you'll find that you have no clutch.

I have a clutch related question to ask.... What all master cylinders work with the mj?? 2.5 xj? 4.0 wj?? 4.0 yj??

At one point in time the mounting of the master changed. Like from bolts to studs, or something like that. I remember reading about it in the peugeot to AX-15 swap page. I'll let you find it. :D

It's in "night 5" but doesn't mention a specific date.

 

Ran the hydraulic external release bearing around my crowded engine room. Its a 1-piece unit which was difficult to maneuver under the first generation of the 4.0l XJ. Ran into a little problem with the clutch brace on the clutch bracket under the dash. The original reservoir on the firewall is installed with a stud and bolt. The new application is installed with 2 studs, 1 on the support bracket and the other on the reservoir. Plus the mounting point of the reservoir rod is smaller than the original. I checked all stud locations prior to running it around the engine area. I did have to ream out a little the support brace. I did not check the rod mounting point diameter. It wouldn't fit on the clutch pedal. I had to remove it out of the busy engine bay, drill out to a larger diameter the mounting point of the rod to the clutch pedal, and re-install the one piece unit. ROYAL PITA!!! to do a job twice. Installed the pilot bearing, clutch and pressure plate.

the question is, is it an internal slave or external?? if internal you need a full day for that. (pull trans )

 

if its an 86 then you are running that ax-5.

 

If it is external then you are a happy camper!

 

I was talking about the master not the slave cyl.. I don't even want to think about the internal slave :wall:

The newer Jeeps are a complete one-piece unit from master to the external slave. I adapted my 88 master to the 99 slave that came attached to my trans (had a few inches of line left on it) using a simple 1/4"-5/16 line adapter from the hardware store. Guess he didn't think of it. :D

nice thinkin.. That sucks you can't just remove the line,, well at least its external!!

Actually, you can the parts to get rid of the stupid plastic line, but you have to call AA, and they aren't exactly cheap, either. :eek:. For the FWIW column, my 1986 MJ was external when it had the 4 spd in it, and the 5 spd. that I put in when I converted to 4x was external also. I do not know if it is "4 banger" thing, though.

i wasn just reading your post that you wanted to change both. but if you are leaving the slave alone that is not a bummer!

I know the day is coming to replace the internal,,(knock,knock) Its going suck,,,,BAD! Not only cause you have to yank the tranny, but things are $$$$..

i am thanking my lucky flags i've got an external slave. jamminz.gif sucks a lot though that i have no time to do this for myself (opening a restaurant is a lot of work), but i've found a friend of a friend who can do it for me for $90 plus parts. steal! :D other places wanted $600+ to do the job. wahoo!

If I have this right, early 2.5s had external, later had internal, much later they went back to external.
