Rear TJ Rubicon Dana44 swap into MJ

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I'm in the middle of this swap and have a question about which parking brake cables to use. The axle is out of a 03 TJ Rubi. I see Teraflex has a 42" cable which is advertised 3" longer then stock(2003 wrangler with rear disc brakes) which looks pretty close to the length for the stock cables in my 89 SWB Comanche. Has anyone done this swap and trying this cable?

an 03 wrangler has comparable length cables to ours?  I did a rough measurement under my truck and got close to 50" end to end of the actual internal cable.  is that what we're measuring or is it the outer sheath?   :dunno:

I'm trying to figure out lengths from end to end. The difference between the MJ and TJ cables are the lengths and the end that connects to the lever for the parking brake. I noticed the cables on the TJ connect to a bracket on the top side of the axle where as the MJ connect into the backing plate on the lower side of the axle. I was hoping that the difference would make up and allow for the shorter cables.

The disk brake parking brake levers are similar between ZJ, TJ/LJ and Explorers. You can use pretty much any of those cables, just get the right length and be mindful of different length for right/left (nothing wrong with getting a pair of left or rights if the length is what you need). The length description is typically posted on rock auto. LJ disk parking brake cables may be a good option?? KJ are around 70" IIRC but that extra length allows some rerouting if you prefer.

Thank you for the suggestion. I've checked Rockauto for the LJ hoping but it looks like the only difference was the length of the front cable. The ZJ look to be the same size as well. I'll go do some more research though. maybe ill weld the ends on and call it a day

I'm surprised there isn't more info out there on this.

I think it’s probably because those TJ Rubicon axles are expensive. Somewhere in the write ups, there should be info covering a disc brake swap, which should have the info you want.

Explorer and KJ cables are longer
