1985 Jeep Wagoner XJ Limited w/a 2.8 V6 carburetor motor

Recommended Posts

Hello...

I have several questions about this vehicle.

If I kept it pure... what would it be worth? (greater Pittsburgh, PA)

And if I choose to install a 99 4.0 liter motor would the t-case, the tranny need swapped also?

The paint was done by an amateur. So, yes it is shiny, but the paint is not high quality.

Please advise.

This is the vehicle in question.

85 waggy. Nice. Don’t see to many that survive these days. Let alone be in nice shape even if the paint is meh. Honestly I’d keep it pure. But that 2.8L is gonna make you want to sell it in the future. You can drop in a 4.0, but you’ll definitely have to beat the firewall to accept the 4.0. And you’d have to swap everything else with the 4.0 as well. That being said, an easy bolt in without any issues is the GM 3.4L of the same family. That can be carbed or fuel injected and you can keep the trans and t-case without swapping those.

If it was me, I’d drop the 3.4L in, go fuel injected and enjoy it.

Cool, but with the 3.4Liter will I also need the harness as well as the matching ECM?

Yeah, I am not sure that I am going to even buy it, as I truly do not need any more projects... my 'much younger' friend keeps thinking that I am a spring peep... lol! Sounds like a real PITA and I still have issues with my 87 Comanche Laredo and I have owned it for 5+ years... so I am afraid of compounding my troubles... lmao!

I mean hell, I’d buy it just because it’s an 85 waggy and it’s not something you see. Sucks it doesn’t have the nameplate for the front header which is offset to the drivers side but I might have one for it.

Also a base waggy but still cool as hell and luxurious. Shame the original owner didn’t get it with the system sentry that would be another reason to snag it.

But the only thing I’d have to worry about as is is just the carb and vac system. Otherwise it would be a fun driver until the engine just craps the bed.

Legitimately, I had a late version of the 3.4L in a Pontiac Minivan and it was a very solid little motor. Would not mind having a repowered jeep with one. Solid aftermarket, although like the 4.0 they have been out of production long enough that the aftermarket is not as strong as it used to be.

  • 2 weeks later...

Usually people who keep the original 3.4 injection, will use a mid '90's Camaro or Firebird, use its wiring and set it up as standalone fuel injection. You can do the same with the slightly earlier 3.1 from the same models.
