Scott86mj
Is it just replacing the 2 piece with a 1 peice axle from a newer dana 30? Or is there something else to do? I'm fixin to Install my 4.56s and will do this if it is no big deal. Anyone done this? Thanks

pingpong
thats the correct way.. there is an easier way if it is a through away rig.... you can put a seal in the outer part of the vacum disconnect housing. I got the seal number somewhere.
SuperWade2
Don't mean to hi-jack, but a similar query.. If I wanted to toss the Stock D30 shafts from my 99TJ into my 89 MJ (both 3.07's) I would have to replace the Inner-Seal as the article in that link describes? I don't have a great reason to do so, other than I'm going to be doing the ball joints and will have everything torn apart anyhow and the D30 shafts from my TJ have 170K less miles of wear and tear on them and are just sitting in a box in my garage since they got yanked for some AlloyUSA Chromoly shafts when I upgraded to 4.56... 86FUBAR
I put 98 tj shafts in my 86 manch and instead of doing the inner seal i just put tube seals on it and over filled the housing a bit and have yet to have any problems.

I got similar Outer Tube Seals from AlloyUSA on my TJ...Sure seems easier than opening up the diff and trying to get that inner axle out... How much "overfill" are you talking about? 86FUBAR
I just kinda guessed on the over fill :dunno: maby a quart
SuperWade2
... I'm getting ready to think about doing this on my 89 when I have the front end apart to do my Ball Joints.... Is it really as easy as pulling the shafts from my MJ, throwing on the Outer Tube Seals and tossing in the Shafts from my 99 TJ D30 and overfilling the fluid? (Or doing it correctly and pulling the inner seals). I'm sure I'm oversimplifying... Wade
86FUBAR
Yup it that easy , the only thing u want to make sure and do is clean the axel tubes as best as u can because the diff fluid will now be travling all the way down the tube and will not be contained in the diff its self so any crud left behind will eventualy make its way to the diff.( only on the long side but clean both as well )
