Ball Joints / Front Steering Components

Recommended Posts

2 questions...

Q1: I think my Ball Joints on my MJ are in need of replacement. I have the Ball Joint Press kit/Jeep Sockets on Order. Is there an On-line place to order the replacement ball joints? Is there a Brand Preference, or any that might last longer than others? Part Numbers? My selection of local Auto Parts stores is pretty poor, so I get most of my Jeep stuff thru the internets...

Q2: Is there a difference between the Stock Steering components (Tie Rod/DragLink, etc) between the D30 on my 1999 TJ and the 89 MJ? I have some looseness feeling in my MJ TRE's, etc and was just curious if I were to pull the stock stuff from my TJ to install a Currie HD Steering setup, if any of that stuff could be reused in my 89 MJ. My 99 TJ has only 38K Miles so the stuff is still in good condition, I am just looking for an excuse to upgrade it to the Currie HD Steering setup.

Thanks

Wade

yea you could use the stuff off you TJ and put it on the MJ....the best stuff to grab is the ZJ V8 Tie rod...much beefier...but if your looking to keep costs down your TJ stuff will work

Cool... At least initially, it might be nice just to do a direct swap of the 18 year old/205K mi steering stuff in the MJ for 9 year old/38K mi that is still in good condition from my TJ. Also gives me incentive to get the Currie setup on the TJ...Which I'm upgrading for the "beef" more than any issues with mine. Since the TJ is primary Off-Road Vehicle right now...

If I'm going to be doing the Ball Joints anyhow might be able to do everything at once... maybe... Might toss on new Shocks on the MJ while I have the whole front end tore up anyhow :brows:

I did my ball joints last week and decided to do u-joints and wheel bearing while I was at it. Then I saw that I had no brake pads left, so I pretty much ended up replacing everything. You might see if you can get a buddy to come over and help for the day, there was a few times when I needed a second set of hands. Otherwise you can just each take a side and cut the time it takes to do the job in half.

As for the parts I used the Napa premium ball joints, but only because I could get them that day. They weren't any cheaper than the moog, so if you are ordering online you may as well get those.

Last Night, I ordered the MOOG's off of Amazon.Com actually... was cheaper than a few of the other online places, "No Tax' ;) and Free 2 Day Shipping... Probably won't to get to the task until Mid-Jan anyhow since I have to leave for a Vegas business trip early next week.

OH...I 100% agree on American made and I buy A LOT of stuff on eBay, but I am always sure to look for the American made stuff. It is there, but you have to search a little harder. Most people that sell it are quite willing to advertise it in most cases though.
