Good DIY Fix Method for Rusted Through Bed Skins?

 

I'm brainstorming for ideas to fix the Rusted Through Bed Skins on my Stomper.

 

Driver side is all the way through, passengers side would be if I picked at it.

 

I want to do something that completly stops the rusting, and replaces the metal in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the bed side.

 

I thought about a couple of diamond plate patches right there. I could spray them with duplicolor to match the truck.

 

Anyone have any suggestions??

 

Pete don't show me the pics of your sheet metal screwed rattle can patch... I want to do something a little neater than that... ;)

u aint gona compromise the integrity of the bed.

 

 

 

Get u some sheet metal , ziz wheel and a welder .

then u cut out rust , bend sheet metal to fit/fill the hole then weld it in ,grind and smooth as necessary , primer -paint and ur done.

Or get some Hannemann boxsides

I was thinking front fenders would make good patches.. as the wheel whell is all ready there. You would have to be good with the cutoffwheel or the plasma... but I think it would look good

Patched a section of rust on the upper rear wheel arch of my box with a piece of front fender.Worked great because all the bends lined up near perfect. For the actual boxside I would use a door skin or XJ quarter panel.

on the 3800 my right rear fender had rust from about the rear upper corner of the flare forward, and my front left fender was toast (backed into), so I used the front wheel well for that.

 

they're close from about the front upper corner on back of the front flare (it matches the opposite rear flare from that corner forward). you won't be able to do your whole flare with one, the wheel wells are different enough.

 

I did find out after the fact that the shop did not replace the lower portion seen in the second pic...it is bondo'd. I specifically said absolutely NO bond was to be used, not even as a smoothing compound (wisconsin + bondo + more effing rust)...$1800 gone to waste.

 

anyways, that's the DL on using the fender. a 2wd rear skin is better. check 89eliminator's truck out for that repair.

Cutting the skin away from the inner fender at the pinch weld will most definatly compromise the integrity of the bed. It will let the skin flap in the wind. I have done a couple repairs to an MJ bed or two that were not permanent and did not work out well 2 or 3 years down the road.

 

I'm interested in stopping the rust on the inside of the skins as well as making a repair of the holes.

Any way, like most of us, mine rotted as well. i was chopping the fenders for additional clearance anyhow and just cut out rot and moved flairs up. Look thru and you will see what I did... LOTSA stuff there....

My MJ had terrable rust in the bedsides as well as the floor was pretty beaten and trashed so I thought this was the best answer....

I REALLY dig the the designer camo "paint" job!! I looked into the vinyl adhesive kits for small to med trucks, almost did it.... the two year life span is what turned me off...... I figured once it started to fade it would look REALLY bad.....
