Long arm suspension system

Recommended Posts

Gonna pull the trigger on Ironman's front and rear long arm kit for the 'manche this fall, does anyone here have such a setup or similar? I talked to the company owner over email and he mentioned some tweaking will need to be done for this to fit an MJ, input and recommendations welcome...

Is it Adam you spoke to? I haven’t installed that system but have installed several other Ironman parts. All seemed to be good quality stuff. If you watch the Comanche episode of “Runs Good” on motortrend they install that setup. Adam was pretty good with pre purchase follow through. He was quite busy though at the time. His rear 4 link brackets were designed for the JCR Comanche build and will require using a fuel cell or otherwise moving the fuel system. There are others who have designed an MJ 4 link without needing to do that though. The front system seems to be very decent. The video shows some of the fitment issues they had.

I do have the front and rear 4-links from Ironman. It is going to be installed in an XJ though. Beefy. I do have other Ironman products. Some actually installed. Good stuff. I purchased the Ironman 4 link kits as it has a bottom plate. So, I think that would act as the skid plates for the TC and other stuff.

Did you go with the rear coils set up?

wouldnt the rear arms be nowhere near long enough to go into an MJ?  XJ-MJ is a big wheelbase difference.

Ironman makes great products but i would think this kit would take way more then "a little tweaking"

That is mostly the tweaking needed for this to work on MJs and addressed by Ironman4x4fab, they were made aware that this was to be going into a Comanche...

Did they mention anything about the belly pan fitment?

As if it's bolt in? Supposedly, but we'll see once I order and receive. I may be moving to a different house this December, I may wait and order then and hopefully have a garage to get this installed in...

Yes, I ordered both kits. I ordered the front first. Then this year I ordered the rear. Presently, I am stripping the XJ body down. I have a few vehicles to get running to move them. Then hopefully off to get that, frame stiffeners etc. I think Ironman had a 'kit' for the MJ. I also looked at Iron Rock, Stinky Fab, Cav Fab and Dirt Bound.

Yeah man I also looked at those retailers you mention and emailed them all asking for detailed info but the only one that replied was Ironman so...

I'm also planning on welding some frame stiffeners on when I get to install the long arms, along with some bumpers...gonna drop some dough on this here 'manche!

Hold up, their MJ kit is just for the front. For the rear they give you a weld-on bracket that is going to require a fuel cell since one of them goes where the fuel tank is. You then weld on a truss for the upper links. The rear is very much a diy 4 link “kit”. The belly pan is not the point of attachment for the rear links. Unless he just built another kit with extremely long links for the rear axle… The fitment of those components requires a fair amount of clearancing to accomplish.

that would surprise me as the unibody rails get vastly different after the stock trans crossmember location.

I remember I was told I will need to make some measurements on the rear for some custom length arms once the rear brackets are set up, and yes, fuel tank will need removed but all this is no issue for me, fun winter project it is...I could keep leaves at the aft but I have witnessed some awesomeness on some XJs in the field with this setup and I want that. Hey, nothing is perfect-do what you want-enjoy the ride!

  • 4 weeks later...

So I ran into the Barnes site and they have a DIY long arm kit that I may consider over the Ironman one since some fabbing work is required either way, chime in if you have some input on this one. Hopefully I get to work on this during the upcoming winter months...
