Ellis333
Appreciate all the info. Do you know What type of 5 speed came in it.

Based on the fact it is an 88 with a 4.0, it would have came with the horrid Peugeot BA10-5. In 34 years though, it may have been swapped for a (most likely case) much stronger AX-
eaglescout526
Best way to tell which 5 speed is to crawl under and take a look. If the case is mated together like a clam shell, it is the BA10/5. If it looks more like a traditional trans case, it is the AX15.
Pete M
peugeot = splits into a left and right half of the case AX-15 = splits into a front half and rear half. peugeot circled on the right:

Ellis333
Unfortunately I got the bad one. What yrs and what type of donor jeep should I look for to do a swap for ax-
Pete M
'89.5+ 4.0L MJ or XJ or YJ or TJ. the wrangler transmissions are slightly different though so it depends on what you're doing with the truck as to whether it's wroth the extra work. you'll need the bellhousing and the guts, the trans mounts, the shifter handle, and crossmember. plus your current t-case has a 21 spline input and the AX-15 will have a 23 spline output so you'll need a t-case too. if your peugeot transmission works fine now, it should keep working fine in the future. just make sure you keep the oil level up and don't abuse it.
