Brush painting rear bumper? Is it possible?

I recognize this is probably a foolish question, but my rear bumper has very faded black paint (Pictured).  I'd like to restore the bumper to black, to match the rest of the trim on the truck.  I would prefer not to pull the bumper off to repaint it if possible.  So my question is this: Is it possible to brush paint a metal bumper and get at least decently good quality results?  Or is that a non-starter?

I suppose it depends on one's definition of decent as well as one's skill with a brush.  Why not just buy a roll of painters plastic and protect the rest of the truck from over spray.  Take the end caps off as well as license plate and plate lights.  Prep it well and spray it with a high quality paint like VHT Roll Bar & Chassis.

Four bolts and the bumper is off. Even if the bolts break they are easily replaceable. Then you don’t have the risk of over spray. But if you want to paint with the bumper on .. sliding several pieces of cardboard around the bumper ends and taking the tailgate off will allow you to spray it on while on the vehicle

Like stroker said about removing the bumper but I’d go farther and get it powder coated. I don't know how much it might cost ya to someone local but I had mine done for just shy of $230 if I remember right and that kind of work will last a much longer time than painting. Plus it’ll look nice and new(be the envy of your MJ friends!) but as other side mask off everything that isn’t the bumper and go to town on your choice of paint works as well.

It'll be tough to do a GOOD job with the bumper still on the truck.  If you want the job to last it should really be stripped to bare metal and powder coated.

 

If you paint it yourself, you would still benefit from laying down a coat of self-etching primer down on CLEAN metal first.
