makoa Posted July 15, 2021 Posted July 15, 2021 I just bought this 88 sport truck on Hawaii. It’s the first Jeep I’ve owned and hopefully the last. I’m not much of a mechanic but I know it’s gonna need some fixing.
watchamakalit Posted July 15, 2021 Posted July 15, 2021 Welcome to the club. Be warned the addiction sets in fast. Looks to be a really clean straight truck. don't forget to add it to the registery.
makoa Posted July 19, 2021 Author Posted July 19, 2021 There seems to be an oil leak from the valve cover gasket. I bought a silicone gasket and installed it today. So far there are no leaks. There seems to still be an oil leak somewhere else though.
makoa Posted July 19, 2021 Author Posted July 19, 2021 I think there are some other fluids leaking elsewhere. I did some investigating and found some smashed pipes.
howeitsdone Posted July 19, 2021 Posted July 19, 2021 Nice looking truck! Get ready for something always leaking Most of these motors leak oil in 3-main places: Valve Cover, Oil Pan/Filter Adapter, and Rear Main Seal. I'm currently restoring one that has almost 300k miles and the amount of crud covering everything is unreal. The first step is to clean (I know, it sucks) as much of the front as possible if you want a good chance at diagnosing any leaks that aren't vacuum or otherwise.
Pete M Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 welcome to the addiction! if you haven't yet, read through this thread:
makoa Posted August 2, 2021 Author Posted August 2, 2021 So I recently came across an older former Comanche owner. He sold me some parts for 300$. He sold me 2 aluminum radiators, one came with 3, 9” fans. A pair of taillights, sparkplugs, sparkplug hoses, distributor cap, ball joints, a new cluster w tac, and carpet. At the moment I’m still converting to open cooling and am waiting to find a larger alternator for the 3 fans ( I’m trying to find an alternator cheaper than the mean green). I also did the CAD delete, changed the calipers and rotors, fixed the lock in my truck, ordered new hardware for the drum brakes, changed the rear main seal, fixed the flattened transmission and engine oil lines and did a bunch of sanding and sprayed rustoleum on brake parts, axels, and some engine parts. I’m also installing a new thermostat and water pump.
howeitsdone Posted August 3, 2021 Posted August 3, 2021 Nice progress $300 is a steal for all of those parts.
