I have need in quotes because I’ve heard the 231 gate can be modified and if you know the pattern you don’t really need the plastic panel that tells you the pattern. Advantage is full time 4wd. derf Posted March 2, 2021 Share Posted March 2, 2021 Double check the input spline counts. Both cases can come in 21 and 23 spline inputs. As long as they're the same, they're fine. Bolt pattern is the same. The shift gate is different as was mentioned. It's a good time to upgrade to a Novak shifter for several reasons. The speedometer sender should be the same. Make sure though because I think they changed it around 1996. It works the same but may have a different plug. Also check the tooth count of the gear and make sure it matches (easy and cheap to get another if it doesn't). The plug for the 4wd indicator switch adds an extra pin. Easy enough to deal with though. I don't know if the slip yokes are the same between the two but it would be a good idea to make sure. The 242 hangs a bit lower than the 231 which will affect any skid plate you have for the transfer case, if you have one. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
