Pete M Posted October 2, 2020 Share Posted October 2, 2020 front axle and front shaft is the same MJ to XJ if they have the same drivetrains. the rear axle will need leaf perches burned into the proper location but will otherwise be the same. the rear XJ shaft will be a foot or so too short for an MJ. what gear ratio is in your MJ's current axles? No idea what the gear ratio is, I've just now started to do modifications and upgrades. What are leaf perches and are there adapters to add to the rear shaft or will I need to get a new one? Pete M Posted October 2, 2020 Share Posted October 2, 2020 jack up on rear tire, put the trans in neutral, and then rotate the tire around exactly twice while counting the number of times the driveshaft spins. 3 and a half will be 3.55, just over 4 will be 4.10, etc. the link in my signature has a thread all about rear driveshaft lengths. that will help you find out if your new one will need to be longer or shorter than is is currently. and if you're new to MJs, this thread is a gold mine Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Dzimm Posted October 2, 2020 Share Posted October 2, 2020 Leaf spring perches are the metal platform things welded to the axle that the leaf springs are sitting on. They are in a different location on the MJ and XJ axles, also the MJ is spring-under while the XJ is spring-over. The perches themselves are the same between the XJ/MJ so when you are looking to buy new ones, you will likely find them advertised for XJ. No adapters like that for a driveshaft. You can potentially have your MJ driveshaft modified given the swap you are doing it may be long enough to have it cut down. If a shaft is too short, it's usually better to have a new one built. Research the heck out of this before diving in and ask any questions before forging ahead. Plenty of threads on doing swaps like this. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
dante2 Posted October 3, 2020 Share Posted October 3, 2020 Look on car-part.com for the driveshaft you need after looking at Pete's link. I got mine for $70 shipped a couple of years ago.
