The86manche
Havent posted in a while but big progress! I had not been to the local junkyard in a while so i decided to take a quick stroll through to see what they had before taking care of other things and wouldnt you know it.. Another orvis! Same year as mine, a 95. They also have a 96 orvis as well. What are the odds? Looks like it had been in a rollover. Roof caved in and it had factory side steps but they were ripped off. Snagged the bodyside moldings off it at least so now i have 3 sets! Including the ones on my orvis I love finding rare one year only parts and i may have a problem with hoarding them as well. The86manche
Anyway, i took full advantage of the weird warm weather to finiah tackling the rocker Front of the a pillar all welded up and bottom finished spot welded. Lots of grinding later and threw down some mud and seam sealer. By the time it got dark it was in primer. Very happy with how that turned out. The86manche
That was over the weekend. Tonight i finished it all up. I had some good moment going after i had got home from work but i originally was just going to sand and mask and finish tomorrow. Decided why stop now? All sanded and cleaned and edges taped. And since i didnt have any paper.. trash bags did the trick! 1k grey primer sealer Moss green pearl base coat Clear coat! Hit it with some heat to get the drying process going and left it taped up as not to ruin the paint.

I want more jeeps too but i don't have the space for anymore. Id love to get my hands on another 5.9 grand cherokee, those things are animals

The86manche
I DID MORE THINGS! seeing the rocker all done really motivated me to take care of other things on the jeep and start the reassembly. I did a major tune up tonight and quite frankly i don't even know how this jeep ran.. Spark plugs were rusty junk, the wires were arking, the cap had crud on the contacts Rotor had crud on the contacts as well and i ran the part number and turns out its a mopar part.. so it might be original. Changed the oil, which was thick and black And after all that she ran smoother than shes ever run and quieter too! I also buttoned up some of the interior and placed the fender on the jeep. All in all not bad. My only issue is the color isnt quite right. But I'm going to leave it. It looks worse than it actually is lol

Plus its the bottom of the rocker so even less concerned.
The86manche
Tonight i vacuumed the floor threw the front and rear seat back in. I used stainless bolts for the front seat. And threw the doors on by myself. That was stressful. She looks really good again! Its been months since shes been together. I have discovered some minor electrical issues and i have a few more things to address but nearing completion! The front door window switch isnt getting power and the rear door window does not work on its own. From the master switch i can control 3 windows, except the passenger front. And i think the front and rear door work on a circut so if the front door isnt working the rear door won't? I'm not sure. I'm stumped but i think it might be lost power from the master switch to the passenger front window switch. I hate electical.. lol
The86manche
HERE WE GO AGAIN! the rusting: electric boogaloo 2 After getting the passenger side all but buttoned up, the fender still needs adjusting, liner, and a few bolts but otherwise wheels on the ground and good i proceeded to removing the driver fender which was rusty and bad. And found this.. Here we go again. While i was dreading and processing my findings i decided to change the shock which looked like they had been on the jeep since new, and some of them still worked.. And deal with the power steering system as it had drained out when it had been sitting. That was another debacle...
The86manche
I don't have any old pictures of the shocks when i replaced them but I'm sure you can see them in some of the photos maybe? They looked really bad just trust me on that lol So let me talk to you about my steering system debacle.. Initially i had thought the steering box was leaking at the pitman arm area as it was wet and the lines didnt look like they were leaking. That and there was play in the shaft too.. so i proceeded to pull the steering box out of that 95 orvis i found. I wanted to pull the one from the 96 but they crushed it(so sad) While i was under my jeep removing things i saw the whole bottom of the power steering pump was soaked too. At that point i had no idea if both had been leaking or the pump was weaping that bad. Either way i was replacing the gearbox anyway and decided to get a new pump. It broke upon removal. Poorly designed remaned reservoir with the low pressure port broke pulling the hose off.. and the high pressure hose didnt want to unscrew. Instead the fitting the line goes into on the pump decided to come loose. Had to take the resevoir off the pump and use an impact gun and adjustable to get the fitting off the line. Hard part over i thought. Fast forward. New remaned pump was drilled out where it was supposed to have threads and all the new remands were like this. Had to go out and get a tap to tap the pump for threads. And had to ream out the brackets for the pump. Get it all back togeher and bleed the system and the pump blows up my gearbox. Later found out the pump had failed right then and there too. Got another steering box and ended up just pulling a pump and brackets from a buddys parts jeep. And its working again! The86manche
okay back to rust. Hole in apron brace, firewall, wheel well, bottom of A pillar and unibody brace. Here we go! Pulled wiring out of the way, knicked a washer hose , cut and ground around the firewall, grabbed some cardboard for templates and went to fabbing. I was pretty happy with how that turned out, firewall all sealed up again. And did a few other patched. It got a little cold so the undercoat kind of sprayed goopy.. soo.. have to let it dry and go over it again. Next will be seam sealer on firewall and then wheel well. Going to tackle the A pillar area last as i feel like that may be the most headache area for me. But after that is done this will be the last of the rot. I hope. Kudos to you for fixing it! I live in new england. They love their salt over here.. It wasnt so bad when i first got this jeep, i may have let the rust get away from me a bit.. initially i didnt think it was so bad. But after doing the rocker why stop now right? Plua this jeep has been too good to me to throw away. Even when it broke it kept on going somehow. That and its low production number makes it harder to just toss. They made less of these than the 5.9 zj. But thank you!
The86manche
Big dump and very long overdue update. Still working on this. But I am THIIIIIIS close to being done. The rust is GONE. From the last time I posted I was working on the driver side firewall and rocker corner. I have made monstrous progress. Starting with cutting all the rust out. It got cold so I rolled it into the garage and continued my work. Part of the floor, inner rocker, brace. And unibody were cut away. Starting with that little unibody spot so I can get the brace welded up and then inner rocker.
The86manche
Took care of the floor patch next. Felt easy so I wanted to get it out of the way Sealed up and done. Welded the brace on and went back k to working on the rocker. Had to find a section for the bottom of the A pillar/ rocker. Which I did end up finding from a 98 grand cherokee si trim. Ironically and sad also a rare zj lol Fender fit for lines and holes for the fender to bolt to the rocker. I ended up buying a nutsert tool and it has made life easier for this project. Drill a hole, add a nutsert. Move on. No welding in nuts or nut and bolt.
