Manual to Auto and 4x4 Swap?

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

My 1989 Comanche has recently come back to life and is running great, but there are a few things I would like to do at some point in the future.

I love the manual, but honestly just enjoy an automatic more, so I was thinking of having a swap done. I also would like 4wd in my MJ. These are not things that I plan to do any time in the near future, but would like to possibly have done some day if I keep the truck for a while.

Does anyone have a list of everything that would be needed for a manual 4x2 to automatic 4x4 swap? Would it even be possible or feasible in terms of cost?

Couple things pop to mind, since we're at the 20K foot level here.

Engine side complete wiring harness from a compatible year Renix (87-90) that includes the TCU/NSS harness.

New TB, or at least the auto trans cable (your current TB might already be suited for the cable

different TPS (auto wiring harness has a separate connector to communicate with the TCU)

new interior pedal assembly

new auto shifter assembly (I'd opt for a floor shift version over a column shift if you can)

different radiator, to include the trans cooler, plus trans lines to get there and back

new flex plate bolts, flywheel bolts are too long to reuse

new front (if you're 2WD now that's not an issue anyhow), plus new rear driveshaft

possible new trans crossmember, if you currently have an AX15

Impossible?  Not in the least.  But you have to count on all of the little stuff along the way.:beerchug:
