Period correct custom 1989 Comanche

Recommended Posts

It’s been a while, and I’ve done quite a bit.

Back when the previous owner had it, the wind caught the drivers door and damaged the upper door hinge. It had been fixed but improperly and began to separate again. I took it to a body shop and got the door hinge recorrected.

I had previously installed a CB radio antenna and finally installed a CB radio.

I also had modified the reverse light wiring to work properly with the AX-15 transmission.

I managed to also acquire a set of Bosch fuel injectors. They’re not the nice Volvo ones, but they made a huge difference in power and overall performance.

I also fixed some rat damage that had occurred when the truck had been parked, specially the 4x4 selector quadrant light and the ground strap on the seat belt buzzer sensor.

Another update:

Both rear brakes have been rebuilt. As I kept driving it the locked up drum adjusters kept coming loose in the drum and caused a ton of noise + soft brakes. I got an old metal tag holder from a 1984 XJ at a parts yard and I just got my new MTS sending unit in so I’m going to put that in soon. Finally after 2 years I’ll have a gauge that reads correct

Another yearly/6 month update:

I missed a few things on my last update, I installed wing windows and a set of front bumper guards from a 1990 Cherokee, as well as cruise control. Still trying to get it to work properly, but it’s all installed.

Looking to try and swap the gears to 3.55s. My 5 speed ZJ has made me spoiled with its 3.55s so I’d like to swap. I have the rear axle already just need a front axle carrier.

Been super reliable still, just about to hit 140,000.

regearing is the best :D

Could I just go and pull the entire carrier, shims and all, and just plop it in you think? I’d rather not try to shim it right, though I’ve thought about getting a 91+ front axle to have the non-disconnect axle too, but that’s a lot more work

google "setting up differential gears".  it's far more complicated than just bolting them in and requires some specialty tools.  :(

Upon further review I might just buy the whole axle to swap in. That was my plan with the rear axle anyway since I have a complete 3.55 Dana 35 Comanche axle laying around.

After driving it many times and having the oil pressure drop down to levels I wasn’t comfortable with (~20psi @ 2000rpm) I decided to swap oil pumps. I had previously installed a cheap Rock Auto unit back in 8/21 when I refreshed the engine but this time I went for a Melling high volume unit.

Not super hard, nor time consuming. All slapped back together and oil pressure is good and strong again. A easy, (but very dirty) weekend project.
