Rear white back up lights wiring ?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know how the rear white back up lights work, what actually turns them off and on

I thought it would be this switch on the tranny but I can only get it to tone out on the middle pin and ground only when it’s in neutral all other wires I get no tone at all when it’s in any mode of shift

The AW-4 neutral switch is attached to the gear select shaft, not like what is shown in the above photo.    Of course, the AW-4 was used with the 4.0L straight six.

I don't know which auto trans was used on the V-6 equipped MJ/XJ vehicles, and don't have a shop manual that goes that far back.

Sorry...

it is that switch, if you can't get it to ohm out when in reverse, its out of adjustment, dirty, or bad. power comes in on the bottom wire(yellow) and leaves on the brown wire, if you jump the yellow to the brown your lights should light up. if so then you know the circuit is good, remove the switch and bench test it, you should be able to ohm it and move the plunger in and out, if it doesn't ohm good replace it

Another one more knowledgeable than I when it comes to very early Comanche's and Cherokee's.

Thats ok. That’s what this forum is for, to share the history and knowledge of these trucks. Even have a whole rebuild book on the trans too.

Ok I hooked it up like you said and it works

for some reason it wouldn’t tone out but after sending power threw it then it worked and decided to tone out

maybe it was just dirty
