Rear window seal

Recommended Posts

The previous owner decided to "fix" the leaky rear window like this and it doesn't bug me nearly as much when my cap is on. Are there any companies making new seals or am I better off trying to find one in a JY? f807969fe482da3bbfc84e1455f6d900.jpg13e69571354f0b018043099598ed2d0c.jpg

I haven't seen new ones and used ones can be tricky to remove in one piece so be careful is you do try to pull one.

That's actually not a seal, the window is glued in with urethane like the windshield, that piece is cosmetic.

You might be able to just reseal the window then clean up the one you have and reinstall it.

yeah, the black rubber bit you see comes off if you gently pry up the edge and kinda roll it to pull it off.  It just fits onto the edge of the glass.  be very careful, especially in the corners, as they are definitely not available new.  you might need to scrape the silicone off first of course. what a mess.   :(

To remove the window, Harbor freight sells a tool that is essentially piano wire with 2 handles.  poke the wire through and then saw at the urethane glue until the window is free.  Then clean off the urethane and reapply it to glue the window back in.  You can hold it in place with painter's tape while it cures.

Be very careful not to saw at your interior panels.

Alright that scares the hell out of me what kind of glue would you guys recommend? I've never pulled a windshield or rear window so any tips are greatly appreciated

I had to replace my rear window, it was a mess and I ended up paying someone to reinstall. Here's what I learned.

-You need to remove your headliner and other trim pieces. I used the tool pete mentioned and it cut it up. It's pretty much impossible to not jack up the headliner.

-Removing the seal is best done after it's been baking in the sun to make it more pliable. Take your time and go slow. New seals are pretty much non existent

-Install, I tried to do the urethane but didn't work. I did it with a 1 piece because I could not find another slider. Well the window fell out and was a b*@ch to deal with the urethane. I ended up finding a slider and paid someone to install it.

Removal wasn't bad install was a B.

Yep, issues was the seal for the slider didn't work for the single piece. It was just a tad too big and created just enough of a gap between the glass and body to not seat properly. I also knew eventually I wanted a slider back so didnt load up gobs of urethane.
