Strange Electrical Issues

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

First time posting here, have spent a decent amount of time skimming through some amazing stuff here. I bought my 88 Comanche 4.0L about a month or 2 back and it ran great. Everything seemed amazing but then I started noticing little things here and there. I've recently noticed some electrical stuff acting strange and I figured I should just get on here and ask. Just a little bit of detail, this Comanche does have aftermarket led headlights and an aftermarket radio. Anyway:

1. The radio will not shut off when car is turned off while headlights are off. The only way to get the radio turn off is if I turn on the headlights and shut them off again.

2. Intermittent headlight blinking. This is probably just a shotty connection, will research this one soon.

My ignition switch also seems a little messed up, unless it is a common feature to be able to start your Comanche without a key haha.

I tried finding some good resources for wiring diagrams so I could go over all the electric with a fine tooth comb but must links I found were expired. I did stumble upon Cruiser54's page and will definitely start by cleaning up the grounding scheme.

Welcome,

Put your vin in the registry and one of us will get a build sheet for you,

see you found cruisers tips

be sure to put your truck info in your signature, top right click on name, down to account settings. be sure to put your engine and trans in it, makes diagnosing a lot easier

Nice looking truck

sounds like they connected the radio light wire to the power supply of the radio. could also be the bad headlight switch

Headlights could be the headlight switch, inspect and look into do a headlight relay harness.

The tumbler assembly gets worn down, or somebody removed the tumblers a new key/tumbler assembly will fix that, they are not to hard to do

Thanks for the tips! I'm betting that you're right about that radio being wired wrong. Also the digital clock does not work so maybe that is another clue as to the wrong wiring.

Ohm thank you for that! Finally some wiring diagrams I can read!!

I've went and updated my signature and posted in the registry, glad to be here.

I'll update once I do a little more investigating. :D

Some led headlights are cheap knock offs, they sell anti flicker harnesses to help eliminate these kinds of problems. I'm planning of getting some led lights for our jeeps so I’ve been reading reviews, One review said it’s a H4 anti flicker harness these jeeps need.

Far as the radio, that makes no sense unless the wired it or the headlight switch wrong.

Btw these headlight switches can melt, a lot of us have added additional headlight harness to take the load off the factory wiring. I’m not sure if you use harness kits if you’ll need Ed anti flicker

IMG_9088.HEICA brief update.

I went ahead and swapped out the headlamp switch for a new one. My old one was looking rather toasty (attached). I also went and installed the H4 anti flicker harness so now my LED headlights work like a charm and I don't have to worry about all the amperage running through my headlamp switch.

I've been finding all sorts of electrical landmines since I've started. Botched wiring, someone using 2 18 gauge wire instead of one 14 gauge to power the cooling fan, and someone hot-wired the blower motor so it was running sans fuse... very dangerous. Also the rest of the wiring for the A/C system is hacked up. Looks like I'll be doing a lot of crimping and soldering in my future.

have you started a build thread to document all this insanity?
