Larger Master Cylinder

I have an 88 MJ with Dana 60's front and rear. I upgraded to a WJ MC and booster when I originally did the axles swap for the better brakes but I really have to push the pedal down pretty far to get this thing to stop. It does stop and holds on an incline but i really don't think the WJ master is enough for the larger brakes. Does this sound right? Is there a MC I can swap in to help with the bigger calipers.

 

What I'm currently running:

 

  1. WJ booster and master
  2. load sensing valve deleted
  3. Single line ran to the rear brakes
  4. wilwood prop valve for the rear (had issues with the rear calipers getting stuck)
  5. All new brake lines combo of steel and flexible stainless

Thoughts?

Mines from a 98 or 99 2500, it bolts directly to the XJ dual diaphragm booster. Only mod is to the boosters push rod, the stock adjuster is too short.

You can make a new one using a  1/4" 28tpi bolt, the new adjuster needs to be around 7/8" longer than the stock one.

 

I've heard that Dodge 2500 masters fit with no modification, but I haven't personally installed one.

I see you want a simple bolt on fix, but if it turns out you need to swap boosters to get a larger master cylinder, at some point perhaps it makes sense to swap to a Hydroboost system.  Many came on 3/4-1 ton trucks as oem, so the MC will be a good match for 1 ton axle/brakes.

The thought has crossed my mind as one of the guys I wheel with has hydroboost. I’ve done a little reading on it and seems like it works really well for some people or horribly for others. I’m concerned the rest of my system (hydro assist) pump and what not are up to the task.

I have read a lot of similar things, some work great, others have problems.  

 

My Silverado 2500hd has HB from the factory.

 

I put HB in my CJ7 using a Astro van HB and MC, ebay firewall bracket, and the 5.3 motor I used came from a Yukon XL equipped with HB, so the pump had two return nipples, and if they are valved differently (I don't know if they are), it should be correct.  Custom made some hoses and it works perfectly.  Brake lines even screwed into the MC with zero mods.  Big upgrade over the stock CJ single diaphragm booster, and the YJ dual diaphragm booster I swapped and used for several years before the HB.

I absolutely recommend hydroboost. I had Talon Hydraulics build my hydroboost unit with a wilwood MC and proportioning valve. I used the psc steering pump with remote reservoir and the stopping power was absolutely incredible. Was thinking about doing this to my MJ but am using an electric vacuum assist dual diaphragm setup that works well for now.

Interesting, that's definitely in the future so not sure what I'll do when I get to that bridge.

Been reading through the XJ/MJ/ZJ master cylinder thread on pirate, lots of good info in there and most guys that comment with HB really like it. I was originally just looking for an easy swap to get a better pedal. I'll have to do some more reading up on the hydroboost but right now it would require alot more to get it set up, new reservoir new lines, new master and booster. Vanco seems to have a fairly complete kit but reading that most people have luck with junkyard stuff too. Decisions decisions.

Vanco makes good kits but I’ve had poor customer support. It’s difficult to get anyone to follow up over there. I ordered a kit that was supposed to be ready in about 7 days after a month I asked for a refund. Poor communication. Hydratech and Talon hydraulics made a much nicer setup with a billet aluminum mount and stainless hoses. The Vanco kit just uses the typical universal “corvette” style booster. The other companies will let you upgrade to wilwood components. It cost me a good amount but the brakes were insanely good
