91 SporTruck 98K miles, Allenhurst, NJ - Auction

Recommended Posts

Wrong stripes. Repaint. Speaker holes lazily cut into the door panels. Aftermaket radio probably installed with the typical level of care. 2.5L 2wd truck. Non-original upholstery and a cracked dash. Front bumper shows possible signs of a previous front end collision. (looks kind of tilted down) I see a rust spot in the center of the driver floor pan.

The low mileage and a straight rear bumper are the only special things I can find about this truck.

Price seems about right for the BaT crowd. He's lucky he got that much.

Interesting that it was sold at auction with 12,000 miles on the clock.

Yep.  Low mileage doesn't mean much to me if it isn't original.  Us 91 owners know those stripes aren't right.

It was a radio delete option truck.  No radio from the factory.  How do I know?  Look at the pictures of the doors open.  There is no rubber tunnel going from the cab to the door.  The holes are covered by large plastic hole plugs.  The installers just pierced those and ran the wires through with no protection (typical level of care is right).  I know this because my truck was the same way, even had the door panels cut to install the speakers.  I suspect mine was dealer installed.  I went back and replaced my door panels, and added the rubber tunnels.

Makes me wonder if a lot of 91s were that way.

I'm always on the lookout for 91-92 models, but if they have the 4 cylinder, I'm not interested.

My opinion is it could be a nice truck to drive if the owner takes the time to fix the right things.  But it isn't a "survivor" by any stretch.  Way overpriced, but if the owner is happy...

Mine had those same door panels with no holes for the speakers and no rubber wire boots to the doors.

I'll never understand $#!& like this. It's easier to get the right parts and do a good job than it is to do a hackjob like this. I wonder what the wiring looks like under the radio on this "high quality survivor"

I like when the value of these trucks go up. It's good for everyone that owns one, but I wish the ones that got put on display didn't have so many blemishes that the average buyer wouldn't even know about much less adjust their buying price for.

Speak to what you did. New materials easily found? Pics? Do you know if what you used fits 87 and 89?

As mentioned, my truck left the manufacturer with no radio.  When I got it, a "old school" shaft type radio had been installed.  They'd done a fairly good job, I suspect it was dealer installed.  They also cut holes in the door panels, in the factory location, to mount speakers, using the factory mounting holes.

I went back, and added the rear speaker mounting brackets, rear speakers.  Then I replaced the door panels with ones that had the factory speaker grills and mounted the door speakers directly to the door, as factory.  The speaker wires to the doors run through a rubber tunnel that goes from the cab to the door, near the door hinges.  This is to protect the wires and keep the doors and cab somewhat sealed from the elements.  When my radio was installed, they simply poked holes in the plastic covers on those holes, rather than adding the rubber tunnels.

First pic is the day I bought my truck.  If you look at the very left of the picture, you can see the plastic hole cover and the wires coming through.  Next pic is with the rubber tunnels added.  You can source the rubber tunnels from any similar year Cherokee, or Comanche if you can find one.  1985-1996 Cherokee.  I don't know if the 97-01 Cherokees are the same, I suspect not since the doors are different.

Thanks. Nice to know the tube is available.  I have an 89MJ that came with a radio and has the tube although I replaced the radio with one from Jerome.  An 87MJ that I have came with a/c but no radio. Figure that one out.  Someone put a new radio in that I will toss and replace with one of Jerome's radios.  Evidently it came with no radio originally because there are no door speakers at all but some high end box speakers were added behind the seat. I will keep those but add door speakers. Hopefully the fader switch can keep the ones from behind the seats from overwhelming smaller door speakers.
