Steering column/ cruise control

My multi function switch is broken in my current column. I was just going to install a new switch but then got to thinking maybe this would be a good time to add cruise control. Would it be easier and quicker to just swap in a different column? I have heard the cruise wires are a pain to snake through the column. Is a factory cruise control swap possible?

Installing cruise control on a HO truck is pretty much "install cruise control stalk, install cruise control actuator" ...but doing it on an 89 is nowhere near as easy. The wiring does not exist in the truck already (you'll need to find the harness), and there are several other components you'll need to find. @eaglescout526 can fill you in on the details.

 

Snaking the wires through the column IS a pain in the @$$, but it may be one of the easier parts of doing it on an older truck. The hardest part would be finding all of the stuff.

So maybe I should just live without cruise? Lol. No a problem for me. Just thought it might be nice to have. Any write ups out there? I looked but couldnt find any.

There is a write up but it’s half a write up. It’s enough to get one started. I probably should go finish that write up just so it’s complete but I didn’t start that one. 

But adding cruise for Renix is involved and requires a few components more than HO,  as follows: wiring harness, brake switch, stalk, computer or actuator, vacuum harness, vacuum canister, speed sensor, servo, cruise speedo cable, servo throttle cable, vacuum dump valve with bracket(should come with the harness) and servo bracket. That should be everything. You don’t need to seek a manual or auto specific set up as both will work in either case. 

Its a chore to add cruise but it’s nice to have and worth the time. And snaking the stalk wire down the column was really easy, I had no trouble doing it the first time.

Man. I hope one day the stars align and I can shake your hand. You never cease to amaze with your intricate knowledge of the inner workings of these trucks. I hold you in very high regard sir.

That said I have a very solid mechanical ability not afraid to tackle anything. Thus me driving a 30yr old truck for a daily. However the basis of where to start and components necessary is knowledge I lack. Do you have a link to the half write up so I could do some research?

Someday the stars will align for ya. Thank you for that, it’s an obsession. Like reading Wikipedia on one topic and next thing you know you’re reading about quantum theory. Anyways here’s the link, I think I’ll go finish it today for any future members who look to add cruise control.

Just wondering - did your stalk have a big plastic molded connector? That slowed me down quite a bit. Having a tilt column also makes it a little tougher. Maybe I was just being a drama queen about it, that's always a possibility.

 

If you get a stalk with a small soldered-on connector for the cruise wiring and don't have a tilt column, it won't be too bad. A piece of piano wire or fish tape or something like that can help.

 

I will say that having cruise in the MJ is SUPER worth it - that being said, I did a whole lot less work to achieve it than the Renix guys I think it'd still be worth it with the extra steps involved in adding it to a Renix truck.

Update got it 90% complete now just need to do a write up on installing the cruise control switch stalk. My experience with installing it on a tilt column is you have to remove the steering wheel and steering wheel lock to be able to thread it through the column.

I had a temporary daily driver that was a loaded 99 GMC 1500. Really the only thing I miss is the cruise. So I feel it would be worth a fair amount of effort to obtain it.

I highly recommend doing it because it doesn't take a lot of modifications to do it just need all of the right parts.

Woohooo! I saw that. Totally didn't think about tilt column owners. That's probably where it is hard to snake that wire down.
