I have a bad transfer case that doesn’t work in 4 high and slips in 4 low. I plan on putting a new one in and was gonna go to the junkyard to get the same one which is 231 j. When I got get a new one would I have to make sure the splines are the same for the drive shaft I have or could I just throw it in it and ride? Also any recommendations on what to do and what not to do when changing it?

What transmission do you have?  The input shafts changed from 21 splines to 23 splines.  The BA10 used 21 splines.  The AX15 used 23 splines.  I don't know about the AX4/AX5 that came behind a 2.5.  Also, the AW4 (auto) changed from 21 to 23, but I don't know when.

Help Comanche Club help you-  add you vehicle information to your signature line.

If you suspect your vehicle has mismatched parts, it might be best to pull the transfer case and verify spline count before going looking for a replacement.

So no issues in 2wd?  When you say slips, does it pop out of gear?  A linkage adjustment can sometimes fix that.

Will do , but it definitely has mismatched parts so I will pull it and look. But I guess my tcase is only 4H and 4L . At least that’s what the shifter says . I have a posi lock for the front axle so I’m guessing the Front drive shaft is suppose to just spin freely until I lock in the posi lock. But when in 4L I can hear a loud clicking noise and it will knock out of 4 If I give it too much gas

I have aw4... is this chart accurate? And I believe the aw4 is from 91 cherokee

I would question that chart.  The BA10 never had 23 spline output shafts, at least not offered on Jeeps.

The shift pattern for a 231J should be (front to back) 2wd--4wd high--Neutral--4wd low.
