Need TJ help for a friend

A friend of mine has a 2.5L TJ. His stepson has a 4.0L TJ with a frame that's too far gone to drive. They want to swap the 4.0L engine into the Jeep with the solid frame.

Does anyone know what's the deal on motor mounts? I found a parts manual for the YJ and, to my surprise, they actually had two different frames. Is the TJ the same thing, or can the motor mount issue be dealt with like in the XJ and MJ, with bolt-on parts?

A quick google around pirate and other jeep forums seem to indicate that it should drop in, no problem. (XJ blocks are apaprently not compatible with TJ mounts and vice versa, but since you're going from TJ to TJ, it should fit).  Since you have both vehicles, it probably wouldn't hurt to measure the mount locations on each jeep to verify (from the front of the frame).

The YJ is a weird beast with a lot of crossovers to the CJ, so that may just be more of the wierdness of that particular jeep model.

The motor mounts themselves can be changed via bolt-on, but the frame horns are welded to the frame (unlike XJ/MJ's that are bolted on).  Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.  I briefly considered a 4.0 swap into my old TJ, until I learned that.

For both the YJ and TJ platforms, the frames are the same during each generation (87-95 used one style, 97-06 a different style).  During those years the same frames were used for all engines, and just the motor mounts welded to the frame were different between the 2.5 and 4.0, and in different locations.  You'll find the 2.5L frame horns you have now are about 8 inches too far back and at least one of them will not work (one does work for both engines on the YJ, the other does not - I have no idea on the TJ).

You do have to cut off the original frame horns and weld these new ones on.  But it's not difficult work.

Check my build thread for my 95 Wrangler (see link in signature) - I had a 2.5L frame which I needed to drop a 4.0L engine into.  Not hard.  Just careful cutting and welding.  Good to know aftermarket pieces are available because the frame horns are different 2.5L vs. 4.0L.

Good stuff. Thank you, Gentlemen. I have sent my compadre a link to this thread.

Gotta help him out as much as possible. I can't do much physically yet, but he's been a YUUGE help to me while I'm recovering from hip replacement surgery. I owe him -- big time.
