rubiconron
What does it mean when my Trans button on the dash lights up? I know there is a little light that is supposed to come on if I flip the switch up. That doesn't work. BUT sometimes when I'm driving the trans picture lights up. It goes off if I hit the button and won't come back on. Just wondering what that means. Thanks, Ron
dfreeman616
the little white one above the switch? that's just a light bulb for when the dash lights are on, so sounds like a bad connection, possibly a short.
JeepcoMJ
tranny lockup switch I think...
Eagle
There is no tranny lockup switch. The switch sets the tranny in "Power" or "Comfort" mode. Basically, comfort mode makes the transmission upshift at lower RPMs. Later year XJs and MJs eliminated it and hard-wired the tranny in the "Power" mode. Put it there and leave it, the tranny will thank you.

My 91 might as well be, has not left the POWER mode for at least 7 years. Better mileage, crisper shifting, better performance.
Oizarod115
we leave the xj in comfort mode, shifts smooth as butter, and i've heard comfort saves gas cause it doesn't rev as high :dunno: either way it a xj on 35s... gas mileage has long since been null and void. but the switch is nice, tap power mode and she kicks it in for up-the-hill action or passing and such
SoloCamo
IIRC, comfort mode makes the transmission "slip" to generate a smoother feeling shift. I know the previous owner kept it in comfort mode, and I keep it in power mode. My tranny seems to be sloppy in comfort mode, especially at higher speeds. Besides, i'm a bit of a lead foot ;)
LEAD_NOT_FOLLOW
As stated it's only function is to change the shift points on the AW4. For those interested, here is the wiring diagram. http://www.greatlakesxj.com/tech/TCU4.jpg And here is the AW4 service manual as well. http://www.greatlakesxj.com/tech/AW4_manual.pdf
