2.5 engine noise

Recommended Posts

Had this noise for a bit. Mostly when it warms up. At first I was thinking it was an exhaust hanger rattling. Now I’m thinking not. Posting a video. Just did plugs, wires, cap and rotor. I was thinking a lifter at first. Now not so much. The idle was fluctuating because my helper was reving it intermittently. Thoughts?

Your exhaust has cracked right at the flange that bolts to the head....Google it it is fairly common.....one if my YJ's is the same....it will need to be welded or replaced....I have just been driving it like that....it goes away when it warms up

Piggybacking off my earlier question. What replacement manifold did others purchase? Are they a direct bolt up with no mods? 2.5 manifold. Thanks for any and all input. I know the gasket and manifold are original.

Knock/tick sounds are too hard to identify using a vid, unfortunately.

Does not sound like rod knock to me, too inconsistent.

I agree, sounds more like your exhaust manifold is cracked, those can crack anywhere, the #1 tube completely separated at the collector on mine.

Chances are those manifolds are manufactured by one company and sold under a dozen different names, won't really matter where you buy one.

I went with a header so I can't tell you those manifolds are quality or not.

Exactly, that was the issue. Didn’t sound like a rod or lifter tick. Leaning toward exhaust leak. Thanks for your insight. No longer worried about emissions. Just want to find a recommended header/ manifold for a 2.5 that is a DIRECT bolt up.

I took another video from underneath. Sound starts rattling in exhaust when the engine is warm. I seem to hear the sound  from the point where exhaust bolts to collector tube at the flange. The exhaust isn’t making contact with any other surface to cause the noise. I was thinking manifold itself possibly cracked but now unsure. The noise is definitely louder from underneath. Pardon my filming skills.

That on and off ticking definitely sounds like a lifter to me . It isn't to agree or disagree with anyone

So what would be the best way for diagnoses with this.. in other words what/ how should I go about checking first? I would have thought( from previous vehicles) a lifter tick is a more constant sound. This sound starts after 5-10 minutes when vehicle is warm. So how do I narrow these possibilities down. Where do I start? Thanks again fellow Jeepers.

My noise starts when it’s warmed up.

Try and get your hands on a Mech. Scope

You will be able to use it to pinpoint any noise even while the motor is running.

A lifter will be easy the hear through the valve cover.....
