Temperature fluctuations

Recommended Posts

Yo, so ive noticed at idle my truck will get to about 215-220 temp and then the electric fan will kick on and lower it to 210. After that it stays at about 210 pretty consistently. Are these temperatures too much for idle? Is it fine if I'm idling at that temp?

The HO 4.0 is designed to operate at 210

If you are running hot at start up and idle maybe you need to look at your T-stat/ water pump/ Rad configuration

?? Put in a new 195 T-stat.

?? Pull the heater hose coming from the water pump at the heater core end put it in a pail or jug and have a helper temporary start the motor.....do you get a good healthy stream of water?

Back flush your rad and heater core....there are products out there ...( Google)......I use everyday Vinegar.

And Like Cruiser says.....don't trust the 30 year old gauge Check it with an IR thermometer (if you can get your hands on one)

These arent startup temps, more like after driving 20 minutes and sitting in the target parking lot for a minute while i wait for my girlfriend to come out. Usually i shut it off while i wait but the other day i let it stay on to see how it would handle it. If its startup or while I'm drivinh the temps usually sit around 175/180. Also pretty much all of the cooling components (pump/rad/coolant/etc) was all replaced last January so its only a year old.

Others will tell you it's normal, I will tell you it's not.

Your pick.

Pretty much the entire cooling system was replaced last January, where should i begin to look to improve temps? Maybe add another electric fan that i can turn on manually?

That's high, unless your gauge is inaccurate.

Verify with an IR gun at the thermostat housing.

I always heard that. "Verify with an IR gun" but youre the first person to tell me where to look so thank you. I guess the thermostat housing is common sense though lol.

You mentioned the truck runs cooler while driving. You also mentioned you replaced a bunch of cooling components.

I didn’t see you mention the fan clutch. I s look into that if it cools fine while moving but has issues at idle.
