I have acquired an 4.0 engine from an 89 cherokee.  It has on the car about 178K miles.  The one in my MJ now has 237K on it.

I have started tearing down the engine in preparation to put it back together and into my 88 comanche.

At first I was just going to change to rear main seal and call it good. but then it had a bent push rod in #3 cylinder so I figured I had better check the timing chain and lifters and before long I had the entire engine apart.

I have some piston wear and the timeing chain will need to be replaced. so I might as well replace the cam and lifters to be  on the safe side.

I really don't wnat to do a complete overhaul of the engine but it is getting to look that way.

I am going to have the block boiled out. and  have the top resurfaced for the head to match.

Where do I stop on this?

If you are that far into it, you might as well do a full rebuild.  Wouldn't cost much more.  Perfect opportunity to build a stroker.

At that point I would just spring for the full rebuild. You might as well your that far in. Then your good to good for another 200K.
