Passenger Side Axle Bearing

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, having trouble installing a new axle bearing, the seal went out on me, so I figured I'd replace the bearing too.. Now the bad part is, can't seem to get the new bearing in... I've rented the tools to remove/install it, but I can't seem to get it to go into it... Am I doing something wrong? Idk if it should be this hard.. No idea what kind of rear axle i'm running but if it helps I know I had to take a c clip out to get the axle off..

Edit : I should add that its the rear axle bearing, passenger side.

Thanks for this, but I'm pretty sure that mine isn't a d44, looks nothing like mine. Plus, the axle bearing wasn't connected to the axle itself, it was inside the "axle pipe??"

Type of rear-end... 35...44....8.25....would not matter...the process would be the same.....you need to be more descriptive on why you can't get yours in.....you got the old one out . . . right.... Let's start there

yea, got the old one out pretty easily with the slide hammer tool, but when I decide to put this new one in, it won't go in... I've literally broke 2 axle bearings trying to get it to go in.. I have the "specialty" tool from the auto store that you tap with a hammer to get the bearing to go in.. I'm confused as to why it won't go in... should I grease it? am I hitting it wrong? Idk how to be more descriptive, I literally put the bearing in the axle tube, put the tool on it and beat it with a mini sledge and it won't budge.. it just stays in the same position..

Post a pic of the axle housing.

You MUST know what you have to know what bearing to buy.

It looks like you have a Dana 35 axle. 5707 appears to be the correct part number, according to AutoZone. And based on the second photo, the old race appears to be still in the axle. That's the cone-shaped, shiny part that the bearing rollers roll against in the axle. That has to be removed before the new race (which should have come as part of the new bearing) gets pressed in. Did the old part that you removed look exactly like the new assembly? On the C-clip axles, it looks like the bearing and race get pressed into the axle as a unit (different from the older, non-C-clip Dana 35). I'm not sure why your photo looks like the race is still in there, but that's what it looks like to me.

I thought the same.  Agreed.

Aren't you going to clean off all that crud from the leaking seal before you put the new bearing into the axle? That backing plate is a mess. I hope you weren't going to leave it like that.

so by "should have come as part of the new bearing" you mean the bearing and race are 1 piece? not 2 seperate pieces? if not, I can't seem to find a new bearing race on the parts list.. and yes, what I removed looks exactly like the new bearing I have.. nothing seemed to break apart or anything..

Did you use a slide hammer to start with?

Yes, I did, knew I wasn't gonna get it out any other way.. I just can't figure out what the lip is from... it can't be from a race.. can it? If the bearing removed perfectly fine..

Take a small cold chisel and a hammer put the chisel on the seam (lip) at 6'oclock....tap it a few times.....does the seam become more noticeable? If so...smack it hard and bend it up so you can remove it.    I do not recall ever seeing a "stepped" 2 level cup.....but I have not seen everything....... Yet

Watch the video again...at 1:04...you see him removing the piece that you left in.....try the chisel method above

alright, I'll try, I just can't figure out why there is a race whenever I can't buy a replacement from the auto store.

It is on you new bearing.....the old one just separated when you removed it....get that piece out....file or sand down any divots made in the process....clean everything up and the new one should press in easy
